Mark Stevens purchased the 104 unit Riverview complex in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, after seeing how many teachers, nurses, and service workers were being priced out. The building was meant to be high end housing, but he redirected it toward below market rents for full time local employees.

Housing prices in resort towns have surged so much that many workers now face long commutes or leave entirely. The apartments require residents to work at least 30 hours a week in the Yampa Valley, creating a direct way for the community workforce to stay close to their jobs.

Online reactions were split between praise and bigger questions about why private wealth is needed to solve housing shortages. Still, for families who can now live near work, the impact is immediate and personal. It shows how one decision can keep an entire community from slowly disappearing.
