In 1972, near Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, a tractor driver struck more than a rock. Archaeologists uncovered the Varna Necropolis, a vast Copper Age cemetery.

One grave, belonging to a single man, contained a staggering secret. His body was adorned with over three pounds of hand-hammered gold.

He wore beads, bracelets, and a unique gold p***s sheath. In his hands were polished stone scepters capped with gold.

Carbon dating placed the burial around 4500 BCE. This date sent shockwaves through history.

It meant a sophisticated European society was mastering goldsmithing over 6,500 years ago. This was centuries before the famous gold treasures of Mesopotamia and Egypt.

The Varna find forced a complete rewrite. It proved Europe had its own early centers of wealth, power, and technological skill, independent of the ancient Near East.
