What is mortgage insurance? It's a fee charged by the lender to protect themselves. It depends on your type of loan or down payment amount. For Conventional, it's a Private Mortgage Insurance, a monthly fee if your down payment is less than 20%. FHA, USDA and VA all have this extra fee as well, directly paid to their respective departments. These can be paid upfront or rolled into the loan, making the loan amount, and therefore the mortgage payment, higher.
