🏡 A Little Piece of New England History… Hiding in Plain Sight

Have you ever noticed one of these old stone posts while driving around New England and wondered what it was?

It’s a hitching post—a reminder of a time when the “parking spot” outside your home was for a horse. 🐴

Before automobiles became part of everyday life, hitching posts were commonly placed near homes, inns, general stores, churches and other gathering places. Travelers could secure their horse while they stopped inside.

Here in New England, you’ll still find these pieces of history tucked beside old homes and stone walls, along country roads and sometimes nearly hidden by years of trees and landscaping.

Many were made from durable local stone—often granite here in New Hampshire—and fitted with an iron ring or hardware where the horse’s reins could be secured. Today, they’re a small but fascinating reminder of how people lived and traveled generations ago.

And THIS is one of the things I love about New England real estate. ❤️

Sometimes you’re not just looking at a house—you’re looking at hundreds of years of history, and if you know what to look for, little pieces of the past are everywhere.

So the next time you see a granite post with an old iron ring like this one… now you know. 😊
