A growing real estate scam known as seller impersonation fraud is surging, with criminals attempting to sell homes and land they do not own. Scammers often target vacant land or properties without a mortgage, using stolen identities and deepfake technology to impersonate the owner. The problem has become so frequent that nearly 1 in 4 title firms reported three or more attempts in the month before the latest survey, up from just 4% two years earlier. In some cases, the real owner does not learn what happened until after the fraudulent sale is complete.

🏠 Ohio homeowners could get a hard ceiling on how fast their property tax bills climb, but only if voters sign off on it first. Two Republican state representatives, Kevin Miller of Newark and Jeff LaRe of Violet Township, introduced House Joint Resolution 10 on September 8, a proposed change to the Ohio Constitution that would limit growth in the taxable value of an owner-occupied home to no more than 3% per year. The cap would apply as long as the owner or a spouse actually lives in the house, no matter how high the county appraisal climbs. 💰

Miller has framed rising appraisals as a back door tax hike nobody ever voted on, arguing that if local governments want more money than a small inflation adjustment allows, they should have to ask residents directly through a levy. Because it is a constitutional amendment, lawmakers cannot put it into effect on their own: it would have to be approved by Ohio voters at the ballot box. 🗳️ It is one of several property tax measures now in play at the Statehouse.
