The 2026 James Beard Foundation Awards® winners have finally been revealed, with many of the country’s top restaurant industry professionals getting lots of love. And the coolest part, two of Boise's own made the coveted list!

As a Boise Basque, of course, this one really touches my heart. Congrats to Ansots! If you haven't been, A) good god man, what are you waiting for, B) be prepared to be dazzled, and C) better book your reservations now!

And as a member of a family that has owned bars in Boise over the past fifty or so years, so kind of partial to cool bars, a big congrats to Bar Please! Pretty cool to see Boise, Idaho on the culinary map.

Time to get out and explore!

As a proud Boise Basque, I love that we have the ONLY Basque language school in the US! Sure enjoyed my days as a twirling jota group as a little kid and then an Oinkari that performed around the state and US. We have a great saying here, you are either Basque, or you wish you were! And come Jaialdi, everyone is a little Basque. If you're new to the area, or haven't been for a while, there is a super cool Basque block in the middle of downtown with restaurants, bars, a museum, a Basque market, the Ezkaldunak, the park. Lots of fun to be had!

Boise is home to the largest Basque community outside the Basque Country itself, with more than 16,000 people of Basque ancestry living in the area.

The community was built by generations of immigrants and their descendants who arrived in Idaho beginning in the late 1800s and continuing through the end of the Franco era in Spain.

For nearly 30 years, one Boise preschool has played an important role in preserving Basque heritage by teaching its students one of the oldest languages in the world – Euskara.

The Basque language-immersion Preschool, Boiseko Ikastola, is located off Broadway Avenue. Founded in 1998, it remains the only Basque-language preschool in the United States.

“The Ikastola community has grown significantly over the last 28 years and has made the greater Basque community richer, with multiple generations more committed to the preservation and promotion of the Basque language and culture,” Basque Museum & Cultural Center Executive Director Annie Gavica said. “This in turn has added to the culturally rich Boise community as well.”

Gavica said the preschool’s teachers are recruited from the Basque Country and hold at least a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, with many possessing master’s degrees or additional advanced degrees.

“Many of our families are of Basque ancestry, but many are not. They simply know Boiseko Ikastola’s reputation as a well-developed preschool committed to giving each child the opportunity to learn in a clean, safe, and fun environment under the guidance of highly educated teachers,” Gavica said. “Each child leaves Ikastola with bilingual skills, confidence, and ready for whatever educational path comes next.”

Boiseko Ikastola connects with the Basque community by staying involved in other Basque events and programs, including San Inazio, an event hosted by Euskaldunak, the Basque Center, and with general communications with other area Basque organizations.
