Brother of Honduran president detained in Miami for ‘conspiring to import co***ne’

Less than a year after a convicted drug lord testified that he had met with the Honduran president’s brother to discuss the repayment of debt related to a money-laundering operation, Juan Antonio “Tony” Hernandez was detained by federal agents in Miami on drug and weapons charges.

Hernandez, the brother of President Juan Orlando Hernandez, was detained Friday for “conspiring to import co***ne into the United States, and related weapons charges,” said James Margolin, the chief public information office for the U.S. attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York, in a statement to the Miami Herald.

Margolin said Hernandez was expected to appear in federal court in Miami on Monday.

2 dead, 2 injured after shooting outside Miami-Dade convenience store, reports say

Two people were killed and another pair taken to a local hospital following a shooting outside of a Brownsville convenience store, local media reported Friday night.

Miami-Dade Police are investigating the shooting, CBS 4 Miami reports. The injured were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center to be treated for their wounds.

Representatives of the county’s police and fire rescue did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

A Miami firefighter was found dead by fellow firefighters before dawn Wednesday, according to the department.

Planning a wild spring break? ❌❌ Please don’t come to Miami Beach, city tells students

If your ideal spring break includes tequila shots on the beach, blasting music from your car at 4 a.m., and smoking a joint in public, then Miami Beach isn’t the place for you.

At least, that’s the message that the city’s police department sent to college students this week in letters warning that — after a particularly rowdy spring break last year — the island plans to crack down on behavior that hurts residents’ quality of life.

“Miami Beach has been challenged in recent years by student misbehavior during Spring Break — to the point that our police department must now take a harder line going forward,” Police Chief Daniel Oates wrote in letters that were sent to universities, fraternities, and sororities across the country. “So I am writing to ask that you assist Miami Beach in sharing with your students the following message from our Police Department: ‘If you come to Miami Beach for Spring Break, you must obey our laws. If you do not, you will be arrested.’ “

Armed man robs TD Bank branch in Miami
😱😱😱

The incident was reported around 9 a.m. at the TD Bank branch at 720 NW 57th Ave.

According to FBI Special Agent Michael Leverock, the robber pulled out a gun and ordered everyone to lay on the floor.

He then jumped over a counter and demanded money from an employee, Leverock said.

Customer Miguel Xiques told Local 10 News reporter Liane Morejon that he walked into the bank as the robbery was in progress. . . . .

Miami named worst city for 🏡 renters in the U.S. for the second year in a row

If you feel like you’re spending way too much of your paycheck on your monthly rent, you’re not wrong.

For the second year in a row, South Florida has been named the worst metro area in the U.S. for renters. A new study by the website Apartment List shows that 62.7 percent of renter households in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach in 2017 were cost-burdened — which means they paid more than 30 percent of their income on rent. 💸💸

That’s only a tiny improvement from 2016, when 62.8 percent of South Florida households were cost-burdened.

According to the study, which uses data from the U.S. Census, 33.8 percent of renter households in the Miami metro area are severely cost-burdened — or spending more than half their income on rent.

Las Vegas shooting suspect Stephen Paddock owned a home for two years in Melbourne, a one-hour drive from his niece and brother in Central Florida.

The former accountant and Lockheed internal auditor managed Mesquite Central Park Apartments in Mesquite, Texas -- not to be confused with Paddock’s current Mesquite, Nev., residence -- before buying a brand new 1,773-foot stucco house in Lennar’s Heritage Isle development in May, 2013 for $246,000. His younger brother, Eric Paddock, and Eric’s daughter, Nicole Paddock, live in Orlando.

Car full of children targeted in Miami shooting 😱😱

Local 10 News reporter 🎤 Trent Kelly said a man and his family were leaving a Marathon gas station near 📍Northwest Second Avenue and Northwest 46th Street when someone armed with a gun fired several shots at the car. 🚗

Miami police Officer Michael Vega said a woman and three children were also in the car, but nobody was shot.

Five bullets struck the Mustang, shattering the glass and cutting the woman inside.

Miami Beach added extra officers. Now business owners want them to stay

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Some business owners along iconic Ocean Drive have banded together to fight crime in an experimental program on Miami Beach.

The 12-week pilot program called TOPS, Tourist Oriented Policing Services, put extra off-duty Miami Beach officers on the west side of Ocean Drive during busy weekend hours.

Sixty percent of the officers' overtime was paid for by business owners who are part of the Ocean Drive Association.

The city of Miami Beach paid for 40 percent: $112,000 per city records. The program expired Aug. 19.
