Winter rye and oats are excellent cover crops for erosion control, w**d suppression, and improving soil structure. Legume cover crops can also replace part of your nitrogen fertilizer, reducing costs by $40–$60 per acre. In some cases, farmers may qualify for incentive payments through programs like EQIP.

The farmer in these photos, located in South‑Central Alabama, produced 6+ large bales of rye and oats per acre. Because he has cattle, he used the hay himself—but those bales could sell for $55–$60 each.

Winter cover crops aren’t practical for every crop farmer. Long growing seasons and the need for additional equipment can be drawbacks. In the end, you have to run the numbers for your operation.
