The best 6 weeks of the year in Michigan just started.

Metro Detroit just hit its first 9 P.M. sunset of 2026.

From now until early July, the sun won't dip below the horizon until after 9 every single night here. That's about 6 straight weeks of late, lingering Michigan light.

It keeps getting better from here. The summer solstice lands on June 20, the longest day of the year, with more than 15 hours of daylight from sunrise to sunset.

And those 9 P.M. sunsets stick around. Even after the solstice, they hang on for several more weeks before slowly sliding earlier into the summer.

Here's a fun wrinkle. If you're out on the west side of the state, you've had this for a couple weeks already. Grand Rapids sits far enough west that the sun doesn't set there until after 9:10. Same clock, later light.

In a state where we earn our summer, this is the payoff. The bike ride after work. Dinner on the patio that goes long. The lake until you can't see anymore. The Belle Isle loop with the skyline glowing pink behind you.

Some Detroit news that's been developing for years took another turn this week.

A federal judge has ordered Comerica Bank to turn over $13,167 that was seized from a business account connected to former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

The money goes toward the $823,649 in restitution Kilpatrick still owes from his 2013 federal corruption conviction. According to prosecutors, that debt is owed back to taxpayers.

Officials are calling it the most significant recovery toward that restitution in years.

Here's the context. The account was in the name of a consulting firm that also owns Kilpatrick's home in Novi. The judge ruled Kilpatrick didn't have standing to challenge the seizure, and noted that neither the firm nor his wife, the company's listed agent, objected to it.

The ruling comes as that Novi home is reportedly facing foreclosure, with city records showing nearly 3 years of unpaid property taxes.

For his part, Kilpatrick has pushed back on the government's years-long search for money and assets, calling the effort "selective and deeply concerning."

It's a story a lot of Detroiters have followed closely for a long time.
