I saw Rush at Little Caesars Arena Wednesday night and it was phenomenal. 🥁

I went because I never thought I'd get the chance again. Neil Peart died of brain cancer in January of 2020, and for six years the idea of Rush touring without him seemed impossible. Alex Lifeson said publicly there was no chance they'd get a drummer and go back out. Apparently Paul McCartney was one of the people telling them otherwise.

Geddy Lee is 73 years old and jumping around that stage with more energy than I've got. He's playing bass, singing, and running a synthesizer at the same time, which is not a normal thing for a human to do. Best bass player alive, and it isn't close.

Anika Nilles has the drum seat now, with the blessing of Peart's family. She's German, she toured with Jeff Beck, and she's known for the odd time signatures Rush built a career on. Technically she's outstanding. She hasn't quite found the confidence to get playful around the music yet, but I could see it coming, and she's one of the best drummers alive right now.

What got me was how much love they showed Neil. A photo slideshow during Bravado. An animated riderless motorcycle during Time Stand Still. The man wrote the lyrics to almost everything they played, so he was in the room all night.

27 songs. Three hours. Full house. They played all of 2112.

One more show, tonight at LCA. Doors say 7:30, they hit the stage right around 8 Wednesday. And they change the set list every single night, so tonight will not be the show I saw.

Tickets are not cheap. But 100% worth it.

The Big House is taking ads for the first time in 99 years. 🏟️

Coca-Cola, Meijer and Google Gemini are the first three. They'll be on the front and back of the video boards and on the padding around the field.

And on a new version of the 2023 national championship banner. That's the one that's going to get people.

Michigan calls it the Leaders and Best Champion Partners Program. All the signage has to be maize, blue or white so it blends. They're also looking at end zone placements and, down the road, jersey patches.

Here's why. Under the House settlement, schools can now pay players directly out of athletic revenue, capped around $20.5 million a year. On top of that Michigan expects about $6.2 million more in scholarships. That's $26.7 million in new expenses for this fiscal year alone that didn't exist two years ago.

One correction on how this usually gets framed. NIL isn't the new part. Players have been able to sign endorsement deals since 2021. What changed is schools writing checks themselves.

Michigan held out on this longer than just about anybody in the Big Ten. There's already Jordan on the uniforms, Allstate on the field goal nets, Michigan Medicine on the medical tents and Gatorade on the sidelines, but the bowl itself stayed clean. Now it doesn't.

I respect that they held out as long as they did, and I understand exactly why they can't anymore. Warde Manuel called it an evolution rather than a departure. Fair enough.

President Trump signed an executive order today renaming Lake Ontario to Lake America.

Here's what the order actually does. It directs Interior Secretary Doug Burgum to change the name in the Geographic Names Information System, which is the federal database the USGS keeps for official place names. That covers federal publications and federal communications. It does not bind Canada, and there's no single international body that settles names for waters two countries share.

Same thing happened with the Gulf of Mexico last year. The federal government changed it, plenty of other countries and outlets didn't.

Trump's stated reasoning is in the order: the deepest parts of the lake sit in US territory, so the US claims most of its volume, and the lake has been central to American commerce and defense. Signing it, he said we've got a gulf and now a lake, and joked that all he needs is an ocean.

A piece of history most people don't know: the lake wasn't named after the Canadian province. It comes from the Iroquoian word oniatarí:io, which means lake of shining waters and predates European settlement here. The province was named after the lake, not the other way around.

For us in Michigan, Ontario is the one Great Lake we don't touch. We've got Superior, Michigan, Huron and Erie.

But the trade fight behind this hits us directly. Fifty percent tariffs on some Canadian goods started Saturday. Monday brought an announcement of 50% tariffs on all Canadian steel and auto imports starting in January. Canada says it responds September 8 with matching tariffs of up to 50%. In this region, that second one matters a lot more than a name on a map.

Ypsilanti Township just passed a moratorium to slow down U of M's supercomputer project, and the way they did it is smart. ⚡

Quick background. U of M and Los Alamos National Laboratory want to build a $1.25 billion high-performance computing center on 144 acres at Textile and Bridge, next to the Huron River and two township parks. The land is already zoned light industrial. The township has been fighting it for over a year.

On August 18 the Board of Trustees voted unanimously for a 180-day moratorium. Here's the part I find interesting. It isn't aimed at U of M at all. It's a pause on approving large electric utility structures. Substations, switching stations, transformer yards, transmission lines. It applies to every high-energy project in the township, not one.

Why that matters: it's a lot harder to argue you're being singled out when the rule hits everybody.

And power is the pressure point. DTE would need to build a 110-megawatt substation for this thing. That's roughly what the entire township uses right now. Fifty-four thousand people.

U of M's side is that this isn't a data center. They call it a research computing facility for medicine, climate science and materials, and they've said no hazardous nuclear materials will be on site and no weapons get built there. Los Alamos has confirmed the larger facility would host classified work.

The township's other argument is about where. Ypsilanti Township's per-capita income is $36,000. Washtenaw County's is $53,000.

Nobody's sued yet, but U of M's law firm already sent a notice back in April calling the first moratorium discriminatory. Two very deep-pocketed entities against a township. We'll see.

U of M is holding a town hall September 9, 5 to 7, at the Marriott at Eagle Crest.
