Mesa in downtown Royal Oak has turned into a Haunted Cantina, and it's one of the best Halloween pop-ups in Metro Detroit. 🎃👻

Henry Ford's most feared man built himself a castle on the Huron River, with gun towers, escape tunnels, and lions and tigers in the stables. 🏰

His name was Harry Bennett. A former boxer and Navy sailor born in Ann Arbor, he ran Ford's Service Department, the company's private police force, for more than two decades starting in 1921. Only Henry and Edsel Ford had more power at the company. Bennett filled his ranks with ex-athletes, ex-convicts and tough guys to patrol the Rouge plant and keep the union out.

In 1937, at the Battle of the Overpass, as many as 40 of his Service men came up behind UAW organizers posing for photos and beat them badly. Walter Reuther was one of them.

Bennett made plenty of enemies, and he feared them everywhere. After death threats, he got a fortified retreat between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, with crenellated gun towers over the river and escape tunnels, one running toward the water. He kept pet lions and tigers in dens in the old stables, and former residents say the cats were let loose on the fenced grounds at night.

When Henry Ford II took over in 1945, he fired Bennett. He retired to California and died in 1979.

The best running store in America is opening a second location, and it's coming to downtown Farmington. 👟

Toni and Ken at Running Lab in Brighton were named the 2025 Best Running Store in America, and they were a finalist in 2023. So this isn't a one-time thing. It's continued excellence.

They're so busy that on weekends there are lines out the door, and they use a waitlist app that texts you when it's your turn. Now they're opening a second store on Grand River in downtown Farmington, expected in February.

And I love how they're doing it. Farmington already has its own running group, so instead of bowling over it and starting their own, they want to support what's already there first. These are great people, great neighbors and great community people.

I drive out to Brighton for my shoes, and it's worth the drive. They measure your feet, watch you on the treadmill and make sure you get exactly the right shoe. And about 65% of their customers aren't even runners. They're people who want a better fit, especially if they're on their feet all day.

The countdown is ON: the CPKC Holiday Train rolls through Metro Detroit on Sunday, Nov. 22! 🚂🎄

Picture a full freight train lit up with glowing holiday scenes from end to end, basically a moving Christmas decoration. Every year it tours Canada and the U.S. with live music, raising money and food for local food banks. This is its 28th year, and since 1999 it's raised more than $28.3 million and 5.6 million pounds of food.

Bundle up the kids or grandkids. It's the kind of thing they'll remember.

Where to see it:

🎤 Windsor, 5 to 5:30 p.m. Free show with Magic! and MARIS at Erie Street West and Janette Avenue
🚂 Then it crosses under the Detroit River and rolls through Southwest Detroit, Melvindale, Allen Park, Taylor, Romulus, Milan, Britton and Adrian on its way to Ohio

There are no stops in Michigan, and the railroad doesn't give exact times, so plan on sometime after it leaves Windsor that evening.

A few tips:
❄️ Dress warmly, it may take longer than expected
🚫 Stay at least 50 feet back from the tracks

Yesterday I was on CBS Sunday Morning. 📺

CBS's Nancy Cordes came to Michigan to find out how people really feel about the economy, and we met at one of our listings in Northville.

The reality I walked her through: a home like that, priced under $500,000, would normally sell in about a week. It had been on the market 35 days. When we priced it, rates were around 6.5%. Now they're around 7.5%, and the same buyer can afford about $50,000 less house. Same home, same fantastic neighborhood, a lot fewer buyers who can make the payment work.

Freddie Mac projects 30-year rates will stay above 7% through next year. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a rate that starts with an 8 before we see one that starts with a 6.

So yes, I told CBS I have a bad attitude about this economy. It's hard not to when people with good, stable jobs can't afford to live where they want to. But a bad attitude about the economy doesn't mean you're stuck. It means you need a better plan.

Look at Northville. In September, the median home took 26 days to sell, the slowest pace in a year. But the homes that sold within a week got 100% of their asking price, and the ones that sat 30+ days sold for about 92%. Price it for today's rates, and it still moves.

Buying or selling, make your plan around the rates we have, not the rates we're hoping for. That's what we do every day.

Dan Gilbert just pledged $1 billion to remake the Renaissance Center, and he says he won't make a dime off it. 🏙️

The Rocket and Bedrock founder is creating a new nonprofit that will redevelop, own and operate the RenCen and the 35-acre east riverfront around it, which is mostly surface parking lots today. Bedrock says the money will never be repaid, Gilbert and his companies get no profits, and any surplus once the project is up and running goes to support Detroiters. It's believed to be the largest contribution to a nonprofit redevelopment in American history.

The $2.2 billion plan:

🏗️ The two towers closest to the river come down, making room for 5 acres of riverfront park
🏨 The center hotel tower stays, shrinking from about 1,300 rooms to 858
🏠 One tower becomes about 384 apartments
🏢 Another is renovated as office space
🌊 The riverfront gets a marina, retail, entertainment, affordable housing and 18 acres of public space

Work is set to start in 2027, with demolition running through 2031 and the last phases wrapping around 2036. The project expects to create thousands of construction jobs and about 2,600 permanent jobs. It's still seeking public incentives, including a $300 million state brownfield incentive package.

Milford doesn't give a Flock. 📷

The Milford Village Council just voted unanimously to cancel its $36,500 contract for 10 Flock license plate reader cameras. In June, it already scrapped a contract for five others, so all 15 cameras in the village are going dark later this month. Residents had campaigned against them for months.

The abuse list keeps growing. Nationally, the Washington Post counted more than 50 officers charged or accused of misusing license plate readers, and 26 of those cases involved spying on wives, girlfriends, exes or women they wanted to meet. Closer to home, a former Oakland County Sheriff's Office employee ran 58 immigration-related searches in February after leaving the department. He's under criminal investigation, and no charges have been filed.

Is there a place for them? Milford's police chief says yes. Cameras helped catch a homicide suspect early this year in about four hours, and helped track a crew behind a string of break-ins all the way to Tennessee. The chief actually supported canceling because the vendor wasn't repairing damaged cameras, and he'd like to try a different vendor once state or federal rules are in place.

So can good be done with these? Absolutely. But until we iron out all the abuses, in my opinion, we should shut these down statewide.
