🏡 Big Mortgage News for Buyers in 2026

Fannie Mae just announced a major update that could help more Americans qualify for a home loan. Lenders can now begin using newer credit scoring models that may count on-time rent and utility payments when reviewing mortgage applications. 

💡 Why this matters:
Many renters have strong payment history but limited traditional credit cards or loans. In the past, that could hurt their chances of qualifying. This change may open doors for first-time buyers, younger buyers, and anyone with a “thin” credit file. 

⚠️ Keep in mind:
This rollout is gradual, so not all lenders will offer it immediately. Mortgage rates and home prices still remain the biggest affordability challenge.
