Wouldn’t this warm the ocean water which would change the habitat and most likely compromise the marine environment?
Appreciate your feedback! Things are moving forward with Ai so finding solutions is key- if this would work, awesome! But besides all the other relevant things related to the project what about the effects on its location and surroundings ecosystem. I feel like that should be priority #1.
China is reportedly experimenting with placing data centers on the ocean floor, shifting part of its digital infrastructure underwater instead of keeping it entirely on land.
The idea involves deploying sealed, pressure-resistant modules beneath the sea to run computing systems for services like cloud storage, AI workloads, and data processing.
One of the main reasons behind the concept is cooling. Servers produce a large amount of heat, and traditional data centers require heavy energy use for cooling systems, along with significant land and freshwater resources. Underwater, the surrounding seawater naturally helps absorb and regulate that heat, reducing the need for conventional cooling infrastructure.
Reports suggest pilot projects and tests have been carried out in areas including Hainan and Shanghai, exploring whether this approach can work at scale.
Proponents say underwater data centers could reduce land consumption, lower cooling costs, and improve energy efficiency.
However, challenges remain, including corrosion from saltwater, long-term maintenance, installation of subsea cables, environmental concerns, and overall feasibility for large-scale deployment.
While still experimental, the concept points toward unconventional approaches to meeting the growing global demand for data infrastructure.
