Big feelings don’t need to become big battles. 💛
When kids feel overwhelmed, they may act it out before they have the words to explain what’s happening. That’s where we can help them move from overwhelm to ownership: one feeling word at a time.
Try this simple three-step reset:
1️⃣ Name it:
“Are you feeling frustrated, worried, disappointed, or left out?”
2️⃣ Pause together:
Take one slow breath before solving the problem. Even grown-ups need a quick emotional reboot sometimes! 😮💨
3️⃣ Choose the next step:
Ask, “What would help you feel a little more settled?”
This doesn’t mean every feeling disappears immediately. It means children learn that emotions are information, not instructions. With practice, they can communicate instead of exploding, recover faster from setbacks, and build confidence in their ability to handle hard moments.
And parents? You don’t have to be perfectly calm every time. Repair, reconnect, and try again. Fight-free communication starts at home; and grows through small, consistent moments of connection. 🌱
What feeling word could your family add to its vocabulary this week?
