Buying a home in San Jose is already a big financial move. The part that catches many buyers off guard is everything that comes after closing. 😬
Here are 10 ways buyers can end up feeling house poor just a few months after getting the keys:
1️⃣ Buying at the very top of your approval instead of your real comfort zone
2️⃣ Forgetting that property taxes and insurance can change
3️⃣ Furnishing the entire home right away
4️⃣ Underestimating HOA dues and future increases
5️⃣ Not setting aside money for repairs and maintenance
6️⃣ Starting renovations before living in the home first
7️⃣ Underestimating higher utility costs
8️⃣ Upgrading your car, furniture, and lifestyle to match the new house
9️⃣ Using most of your savings for closing costs
🔟 Having little or no emergency fund left after the down payment
In the Bay Area, where the cost of homeownership can already be high, these expenses can add up quickly.
My advice: don’t just budget for buying the home. Budget for actually living in it.
