At the 1856 Country Store in Massachusetts, you can step into a little piece of old Cape Cod that has been part of Centerville for generations. The red building actually dates back to 1840, when it was first used to store cranberries after harvest. Just two years later, Samuel and Moses Hallet turned it into a shoe store before it became a general store in 1856. Today, the shelves are filled with the kind of things that make it hard to leave empty-handed, including old-fashioned penny candy, jams and sweets, bayberry candles, soaps, toys, jewelry, rope bracelets, Cape Cod gifts, and plenty of fun little finds. The same family has owned the store since the 1970s, keeping its small-town feel alive instead of turning it into a modern gift shop. Outside, you can relax for a bit on the porch benches and take in Centerville’s historic Main Street, which is still lined with old sea captains’ homes. The store is also just up the road from Craigville Beach and around the corner from another longtime Cape Cod favorite, Four Seas Ice Cream. It’s an easy stop where shopping, local history, and pure nostalgia all come together.
