Italian Village is about to look a little different.

The nearly century-old downtown restaurant group is opening Café Pisolino near McCormick Place, bringing a more casual Italian cafe vibe to the neighborhood this June.

For anyone who works downtown, hits conventions, or just loves Chicago food history, this means you’ll be able to grab coffee, pastries, and lighter Italian bites tied to a classic brand without committing to a full-blown dinner in the Loop.

A new patio-focused cafe and bistro is coming to Chicago’s Near South Side.

Patio Cafe and Bistro is aiming to be that all-day spot for coffee, brunch, and casual bites with outdoor seating just south of downtown.

For people who live or work in that pocket between the South Loop and the rest of the Near South Side, it’s one more reason to stay close to home for a patio hang instead of always heading into the Loop or up to busier restaurant strips.

A Logan Square favorite just got put on the national map.

Best Intentions is now in the running for Best U.S. Cocktail Bar at the 2026 Spirited Awards, which means a neighborhood hangout is suddenly getting big-time attention.

For anyone who loves Chicago’s bar scene, this kind of recognition says a lot about how strong the talent is here — and it also quietly makes living near spots like this feel a little more special.

Billions of dollars in quantum tech funding are now pointing straight at Illinois. Between new federal grants and a dedicated Illinois Quantum and Microelectronics Park on Chicago’s Southeast Side, this isn’t just a science headline — it’s a long-term jobs and investment story.

For people who live in and around Chicagoland, big moves like this can quietly influence where high-paying STEM jobs land, how nearby neighborhoods grow, and which parts of the region suddenly feel more attractive for the next wave of renters and buyers.

CherryVale Mall just picked up a very cheesy upgrade.

Sassy Mac Boys, the Rockford-area gourmet mac and cheese brand, is opening a new location inside the mall in the former Wetzel’s Pretzels space.

For locals, that means big loaded mac bowls and comfort food you can grab while you shop or have delivered, and it’s another sign that regional malls are trying to lean more on local food names instead of only relying on national chains.

A South Side food truck is turning baked potatoes into the whole meal, not just a side.

Gig’s Gourmet Baked Potato is loading huge spuds with full-on toppings plus wings, salads, and desserts near 87th and Cottage Grove.

For the neighborhood, it’s another reason to stay closer to home for creative food instead of driving into the Loop or the North Side every time you want something different, and it shows how much energy is building around local-owned spots.

Wicker Park Connection just hit the market, and this isn’t your average apartment listing — it’s 207 units sitting over a fully leased retail lineup that includes a Target.

In a market where Chicago rent growth and sales volume are outpacing the national average, this kind of mixed-use setup says a lot about where investors think demand is going.

On the North Side, having anchor retail, transit, and amenities all layered into one corner can quietly reset what “prime location” means.

Jackson Park is getting ready for a very different kind of crowd.

The Obama Presidential Center is projecting around 700,000 visitors a year, and nearby South Side businesses and hotels are already gearing up for that traffic.

For local restaurants, shops, and services, that kind of steady visitor flow could mean more year-round customers and a chance to build something sustainable just outside downtown, but there are still real questions about who will benefit the most and how much everyday residents will feel it.

Rogers Park is getting a new place to slow down and actually hang out.

Monarch Community Cafe is setting up at 7010 North Clark with a clear goal of being more than just another coffee stop.

For neighbors near the Metra and along Clark, that means longer hours, space to meet or work, and events built around local stories and art, which is exactly the kind of third place that can make a block feel more connected.

The owners of the Bulls and Blackhawks just got a $55 million tax break from Chicago — and here's what they're building with it.

City Council approved the incentive for the 1901 Project, a $7 billion transformation of 55 acres of parking lots around the United Center into a music hall, hotel, parks, and up to 9,463 residential units across six phases through 2040.

Is a $55 million tax break worth it for a $7 billion West Side transformation?

Phase 1 alone is expected to generate $46.3 million more in tax revenue than those parking lots currently produce.
