One of the oldest surviving private streets in St. Louis is Benton Place. Laid out for Montgomery Blair by Julius Pitzman in 1868, it was one of the first in St. Louis to utilize a curvilinear street with a boulevard down the middle, as opposed to the grid pattern used in most parts of the city. Before anyone moved onto the street, in 1868, the architectural firm of Maurice and Dickinson designed three homes to entice residents to come live in the new subdivision. This particular house was moved into by James Johnson Lindley in 1872, after having previously been owned by Edward S. Rowse, who did not live there.
