From Mea Danigelis: Welcome to this edition of my Saturday Morning Economist, where I'm sharing the latest mortgage market updates, along with additional information and insights that I believe you may find helpful.
Mortgage Market
This week’s economic reporting helped reverse the upward pressure that the 10yr Treasury and mortgage bonds experienced in the previous four weeks. December's producer inflation released on Tuesday, core consumer inflation on Wednesday, and retail sales figures on Thursday were weaker than anticipated. These reports were positive for the bond market and as a result, rates improved slightly this week.

Economists began to question if the Federal Reserve’s rate cut last December would be the last for the foreseeable future since inflation proved to be stubborn throughout Q4 2024 while recent labor data has been strong. This week’s inflation data helped pivot those expectations, moving projections back toward some additional easing of monetary policy later this year. Next week’s economic reporting schedule is very light ahead of the Fed’s 1st meeting of the year on January 29th, but I’ll continue to monitor the market daily for any potential influence on the direction of rates.
