Community update September: I was hoping this would be a report on how smoothly everything is going and how well we're doing as a community — and we actually are. There are more wonderful people joining us. We had a tiny house arrive all the way from California last week — it had the most adventurous journey, including delays, broken axles, tire blowouts, and DOT re-routes — but it arrived and brought two lovely people and another furry resident to the community. We're expecting at least 4 more tiny homes over the next 6 weeks and are excited for artists, jewelry makers, woodworkers, gardeners, and people with lots of positive energy to join us. Welcome! The summer gardens are producing more food than we can eat - melons, luffa, and okra with sweet potatoes almost done and winter veggies ready to go in the ground as soon as the heat lets up. Jerry, Larry, and Jedaki have been working on the tiny home (I decided to go by "Mary" for now, just to fit in) and the exterior is ALMOST done.

On a less exciting note, we're currently in a legal dispute with a former tenant whose lease has expired and who has not vacated the property. This is an ongoing court matter, so I won't go into detail here, but it's obviously taking up more time and energy than any of us would like right now. I'll just note that in a public review, he described the community as "a prison where you are forced to pay rent" — which is a curious thing to say about a place he's fighting this hard to stay in. Send good vibes.

Community update 7/19/26: Have I mentioned recently how wonderful it is to be part of a community? Well, it is. While Anna was in Germany for her mom's 80th birthday, everything was taken care of. The chickens were fed, the eggs collected, the melons harvested and shared, and the veggies and baby trees watered (we're watering from a private well). People pitched in when someone else wasn't able to. Thank you. We let the corn go, it was just too water hungry with this drought, but cantaloupe, watermelons, and lemony honeydews are doing fine. We had a community meeting to plan our fall garden, let's hope August brings some rain. We applied with the USDA for a farm permit and got permission from County Stormwater to add an "amenity basin" (aka a small pond) to use for watering in the future - if said rain ever materializes. We're impatiently waiting for 5 community members to move in between now and October and we met up with a few people who are interested in joining us. We found and removed an egg thief (a 6 foot rat snake that had eaten at least 5 eggs that day - likely a repeat offender) and had a fascinating alligator encounter while paddleboarding - he was big and did not think we should enter his territory. So we didn't. No alligators were hurt or injured during the filming of this encounter. Stay cool out there!

Community update 4th of July: lots of new experiences over the past few weeks - the fire department showed up at my door with the big fire truck after one of our residents smelled an electric fire. This allowed us to figure out that - after all the work with the GIS and the county - the fire department does NOT have a map of our community and didn't know where to go. We also established that the fire hydrant does NOT have water (which I knew, but hadn't been able to get anyone to take responsibility for, now the fire department will take care of it) AND, drumroll please, the fire truck drove the entire loop, completing their very own proof-roll test and the road did fine (despite only having been tested for 74,000 lbs and not the full 80,000 lbs of the truck, which had caused a several week headache for us back in January). Bonus: one of the fire fighters was an electrician and fixed the problem. We also had the alarm of one of the septic tanks come on (at 2 am, of course) and learned who is a hard sleeper and who is not. I remembered how to turn on the pump manually for a bit and the septic installer came by and adjusted the levels. No additional alarms so far (it's a horrible alarm). With the drought, veggies are coming in slowly, but we're keeping alive what we can keep alive. Finally, we started to work on our very own tiny home that will hopefully be available for short-term rentals by the end of the year. Roofing bought (we asked that they roofers wait out the heat wave and not work this weekend), siding ordered, windows and door installed. If you are interested in community and the tiny home life-style near the coast, let's schedule a visit, so you can check out if we're a good fit for you.

Community update: Our community is growing and so are our vegetables - thanks to lots and lots of watering when it comes to the veggies, rain would be nice. One of our residents took over one of the garden beds near the entrance to the community and it turned out super cute. Personally, I'm a utilitarian gardener: make it grow and keep the sharing with bugs and birds fair. Now we have someone who actually has some decorating sense. Love it! We had several potential residents tour and decide to join us within the next few months. Very exciting to learn what they like about us and want to contribute. People aren't eating enough eggs, just saying, so if you're in the area and need eggs, stop by! With summer weather in full swing, we have been going paddleboarding most weekends. We're planning for a grand opening mid-September and hope that our local neighbors can come and celebrate with us.

We now have 5 tiny homes on wheels on our property with at least 2 more scheduled to arrive later this summer. We also have a few campers who seem to like our community enough to consider getting tiny homes. We had our first community meeting to discuss such exciting things as mail delivery, chicken chores, and watering duty. Everyone enjoyed the dessert that was lovingly prepared in a tiny home kitchen and left with some eggs and cucumbers (that's what the garden offers right now, but tomatoes are coming in, corn looks good, and melons are starting to spread). But nicest thing was that help was offered and available when we needed help with driving to an emergency medical appointment. No need to stress out about rearranging work schedules or canceling the appointment. We are sold on our community. Couldn't be happier with our neighbors. Thank you. We're still accepting campers and RVs for the summer if you'd like to stay for a few weeks or months.

We are excited to report: The first tiny homes are moved in and more coming next week. If you have a tiny home or are thinking about getting one, please come visit to explore if we're the right place for you. We're also offering a summer special for campers - $750 a month for a 3-month lease (plus electricity). While there is a bit more work to be done before our official grand opening, we're starting Movie Nights under the stars. To start us off today, we'll be watching "Remarkably Bright Creatures" starting around 8:30 pm on the concrete pad. Open to the public, but expect a learning curve as we figure out how to make this work. Call or text to: 910-209-0906 and check us out at www.noble-commons.com

Weekly update Mother's Day weekend: We have residents and more on the way! But of course, nothing was smooth, on the contrary, it was another nailbiter week. We have a TCO (temporary certificate of occupancy) with the condition that the entrance needed to be paved before adding more than 4 residents. Our paving was scheduled for APRIL 14th, followed by "we'll get to it next week", "we'll get to it next week", "we'll get to it...." Which led to another round of frustrated tears followed by (the typical pleading) phone calls. It worked! The entrance is paved (it looks pretty unspectacular), the final final inspection is scheduled for Wednesday, and since everything has been inspected except for the entrance, we should be good with more tiny homes moving in. Why do something the easy way, when you can add some stress? We're so excited to finally welcome residents and are looking for a day to plan our GRAND OPENING. We're currently accepting CAMPERS and RVs for SHORT-TERM leases (from 1 WEEK up to 3 MONTHS) as well. If you have a camper and want to spend some time near the beach, check us out!
It's been an unusually cold spring, so the garden is behind, but all the summer vegetables are finally in the ground and my little corn field is doing well. Reach out for more information: 910-209-0906
