I really enjoy walking Bizz Johnson Trail in the Susan River Canyon in Lassen County, California, on an autumn morning. "The Bizz", as it's known by us locals, is part of the Rails to Trails Conservancy, which promotes using defunct railroad grades as hiking, biking, riding trails across the nation. It runs from Westwood, California, down to Susanville, California, a bit over 20 miles, much of it right along the shore of the beautiful Susan River.

On this October morning a nice bit of rain had come through the evening before and got all the deciduous foliage nice and wet, enhancing their beautiful autumn tones. The sky was cloudy but beginning to clear, creating some nice dappled light around the entire area. The best part was that I had the entire area all to myself that morning!

Traffic Alert 09/17/2026 12:47 PM: Northbound traffic is currently backed up at US-395 at the Agricultural check station, to the Nevada border.

US-395 has a large influx of traffic due to Interstate 80 being closed, west of Reno, NV due to the Florstin Fire.

Expect delays!
