Tick Season Is Here in Lassen & Plumas Counties. Here’s What You Need to Know

Living in rural Northern California means spending time outdoors, but it also means dealing with ticks.

Here are some tips I’ve learned:

❌ Don’t use matches, Vaseline, nail polish, soap, or other home remedies.
These methods can stress the tick and increase the risk of disease transmission.

✅ The safest way to remove a tick:
• Use fine-tipped tweezers
• Grab the tick as close to the skin as possible
• Pull straight upward with steady pressure
• Don’t twist, jerk, or squeeze the body

If part of the mouthpiece remains in the skin, don’t dig it out. Your body will usually push it out naturally.

🧼 After removal:
• Clean the bite area with soap and water or rubbing alcohol
• Wash your hands thoroughly

📌 One tip many people don’t know: Save the tick!
Instead of flushing it, place it on an index card and cover it with clear tape. Write down:
• Date removed
• Location on your body
• Where you believe you were exposed

If you develop symptoms within the next month—such as a rash, fever, fatigue, headaches, or joint pain—you’ll have valuable information to share with your healthcare provider.

⚠️ Pay extra attention if the tick was engorged (swollen with blood).
If you’re unsure how long it was attached, contact your healthcare provider promptly. Early treatment can significantly reduce the risk of tick-borne illness.

🌲 Stay safe out there and be sure to check kids, pets, and yourself after spending time in tall grass, brush, or wooded areas.

Have you found more ticks than usual this year around Lassen County?
