According to new U.S. Census Bureau estimates, about 52% of Georgia’s population is now nonwhite, a threshold the state was not projected to cross for decades.  The shift is being driven by new residents who moved into the state between 2020 and 2025. More than 40% of those new residents are Hispanic, 33% are Black, and 20% are Asian. During that same period, Georgia lost roughly 25,000 white non-Hispanic residents.  · Georgia’s total population now stands at approximately 11.3 million, and demographers had not projected the state would become majority-minority until at least 2060. The transformation happened more than three decades earlier than expected.  The Atlanta metro area has been the primary driver of this growth, but the diversification is no longer confined to the city. It is spreading into counties across the state that have historically been overwhelmingly white. · The significance of this moment is hard to overstate. Georgia is the state of the Civil Rights Movement’s deepest battles, the birthplace of Dr. King, and a former stronghold of the Confederacy. Now it stands as one of the most racially diverse states in the country and home to the third largest Black population in America. The political and cultural implications of this shift are only just beginning to surface, and Georgia has already shown the country what that shift can look like at the ballot box in recent elections.
