Twenty four miles of Atlantic coastline with no condos, no boardwalks and no souvenir shops still exist in Florida, and most people drive right past the turnoff. Canaveral National Seashore protects nearly 58,000 acres of barrier island, dunes, coastal hammock and open water just east of Titusville, making it the longest expanse of undeveloped land on Florida's east coast. The park splits into three beaches: Playalinda on the south end, remote Klondike in the middle, and Apollo to the north.

More than two thirds of the seashore is Mosquito Lagoon, an estuary of national significance where manatees, bottlenose dolphins and wading birds move through shallow water that paddlers can explore by kayak or canoe. The beaches rank among the most important loggerhead nesting grounds in the country, and green, leatherback and Kemp's ridley turtles nest here too. Over 310 bird species have been recorded.
