Today on Juneteenth, we celebrate freedom and remember that the Underground Railroad passed through many Essex County communities, including Beverly, Ipswich, Newburyport, West Newbury, and Amesbury.

According to Ipswich Town Historian Gordon Harris, local abolitionists and ordinary citizens helped freedom seekers travel north toward New Hampshire and Canada, making our region part of an important chapter in the fight against slavery.
Several local homes and sites are associated with Underground Railroad activity, including:

• Dr. Thomas Manning House (19 North Main Street, Ipswich), where a hidden basement chamber can still be seen today.�• Rev. David Kimball House on Meeting House Green in Ipswich, a center of abolitionist activity.�• Dr. Ingalls Kittredge's home at Cabot and Federal Streets in Beverly, which was described as always being open to freedom seekers.�• The home of Betsy and Simeon Dodge in Marblehead, long associated with sheltering fugitives escaping slavery.

As we honor Juneteenth, we remember the courage of those seeking freedom and the local residents who risked their own safety to help them.

Special thanks to Gordon Harris for preserving and sharing this important history of the Underground Railroad in Essex County.

Some closings are a little more emotional than others.

It was truly an honor to help my sellers close the chapter on the home where they raised their family, celebrated milestones, and created years of memories. Leaving a home filled with so much history is never easy, and Georgetown won't be quite the same without them.
