Indian River Mall demolition to begin soon; to become 250,000-square-foot outdoor retail hub 🚜

VERO BEACH — Demolition crews are set to begin working at the Indian River Mall, marking the end of an era for the aging indoor shopping center and the start of its conversion into a modern outdoor retail hub.

The project will tear down the former Sears and Macy's wings. After demolition is complete, developers will start the project's first construction phase. It will include about 250,000 square feet of new outdoor shopping space in five buildings, plus a drive-through restaurant.

Crews are waiting on final county permits before demolition begins in the next few weeks.

Sprouts Farmers Market will join the redeveloped Indian River Mall site as a key tenant. The specialty grocer focuses on fresh, natural and organic foods. It sells produce, meat, seafood, deli items, baked goods, dairy, frozen foods, bulk goods and packaged items. It also offers vitamins, supplements, natural body care and household products.

The western part of the mall, which includes the food court and AMC Theatres, will remain open during the construction.

When the redevelopment of the 250,000-square-foot property is complete in 2027 and 2028, developers envision a family-oriented shopping destination featuring retail stores, restaurants and entertainment options.

👉Indian River Mall (History)

The Indian River Mall opened in 1996. Developer Edward J. DeBartolo Corp. built the enclosed shopping center with anchors JCPenney, Sears, Dillard's and Burdines. A food court and an AMC movie theater were added in 1997. The mall was once a key shopping destination in Indian River County.

Like many shopping malls across the United States, Indian River Mall has seen fewer shoppers and more empty stores as consumers shop more online and at open-air centers.

DTS Properties II, LLC purchased the mall in May of 2024 for $14.8 million from Indian River Mall Realty Holding with plans to attract new tenants and improve the property.
