ESSENTIAL FALL MAINTENANCE FOR YOUR HOME

It’s that time of year when the leaves begin to change and the temperature cools – hello, autumn.
If you’re looking to get a head start on preparing your home for the colder months, here’s a checklist of seasonal maintenance tasks you can do to keep your home ready for the change in weather.
Outdoor Tasks:
• Clean Gutters and Downspouts: Remove leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts to prevent clogs and water damage, and ensure downspouts direct water away from the foundation.
• Inspect the Roof: Check for damaged or missing shingles and replace them, and look for signs of leaks or water damage in the attic or on the ceiling.
• Seal Gaps and Cracks: Caulk gaps and cracks around doors and windows to prevent drafts, and seal gaps in the foundation to keep out pests and cold air.
• Winterize Outdoor Faucets and Sprinkler Systems: Drain and disconnect hoses to prevent freezing.
• Trim Trees and Trim Bushes: Trim branches away from the house to prevent damage, and remove dead or diseased branches.
• Test Exterior Lighting: Replace bulbs in outdoor lights if needed for safety and security.
• Walkway Maintenance: Secure railings and take care of any loose pavers or bricks that may cause a slip or fall.

Indoor Tasks:
• Service Your Heating System: Schedule an HVAC inspection and tune-up for efficiency and replace the furnace filter.
• Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Replace batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and test to ensure they are working correctly.
• Insulate Pipes and Water Heater: Wrap exposed pipes to prevent freezing and potential bursts.
• Check and Clean Ventilation Systems: Clean exhaust fans to ensure they function correctly, and clean the dryer vent to prevent fire hazards.
• Check Insulation in Windows & Doors: Add or replace weatherstripping to prevent drafts.
