What is pointing?

On a face brick wall that has not been plastered on the exterior walls, can have interior damp on the inner home walls plaster. This damp is usually scattered damp meaning it does not appear in one area but lots of different areas on the interior walls plaster.
This is caused by holes in the cement between the bricks. Water pushes laterally into the wall and creates this damp.

V-Joints

A V-joint is a cavity cut into the new plaster with a V-joint tool. This cavity is cut on the existing DPC (Damp proofing course) line. Rising damp from below the V-joint can only rise to the height of the V-joint ensuring that moisture does not enter into the interior walls plaser.

A V-joint should be cut on all DPC (Damp proofing course) lines especially in a multi level home.

Tanking

What is tanking?

Tanking is sealing of bricks with a Cementous sealer. There are a few products on the market, they all work, most importantly is to ensure that you remove the contaminated plaster then seal the bricks to the products recommendations.

Never try to seal just the plaster you must seal the bricks.

Bridging

What is Bridging ?

Soil or paving against the exterior perimeter wall which is higher than the DPC (Damp proofing course) level allows moisture to push laterally into the wall above the DPC (Damp proofing course).

How to gauge the DPC level?

The DPC is usually beneath the floor slabs +- 100mm thick. Soil against the exterior perimeter wall below the DPC will create no problem unless there is no V-joint cut into the exterior walls plaster on the DPC level. Water will only rise to the V-joint height and should not be able to for any higher.

Damp in M4 / 5 Cement Bricks

These bricks are very porous and water enters into the bricks from beneath the DPC (Damp proofing course) under the concrete floor slabs as well as any pooling water against the exterior walls will laterally push into the bricks. Cracks or holes in the exterior plaster will also allow moisture to enter into the bricks. This moisture will encourage blistering of paint and efflorescence to form on both interior and exterior walls plaster.

Rising Damp

Beware!!!

Do not remove suspended wooden floors without sealing the bricks in the cavity before filling.

This will lead to rising damp as moisture from the fill in the cavity will push laterally onto the walls plaster.
