A home built with love, restored with memories, and ready to make new ones.
There are holiday homes… and then there are homes that carry a story.
390 Aloë There Guest House in Malgas is one of those special places.
More than 20 years ago, my Dad, Jay de Moor, built this beautiful home with one thing in mind — creating a spacious, comfortable and homely place for my Mom to enjoy while he was out fishing on the magnificent Breede River.
It became a home filled with laughter, family and friends, fishing stories, good food and endless games of cards around the dining table.
The open-plan living area still captures that feeling today — flowing effortlessly from the lounge and dining area into the kitchen and bar, opening onto the braai patio with beautiful views of the Breede River.
The home has three bedrooms, including a main bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a newly renovated full family bathroom and a guest loo. Upstairs, the enclosed patio offers two comfortable day beds, perfect for relaxing, reading or simply taking in the river views.
In 2019, Dad sold the property to fund another project in Mossel Bay.
Then, in 2025, something very special happened.
390 Aloë There came back onto the market — and we bought our family home back.
And when we opened the doors, we were overwhelmed to discover that almost everything was still there.
The furniture.
The crockery.
The cutlery.
And even the beautiful handmade curtains my Mom had sewn herself.
It felt as though the home had been waiting for us.
A NEW CHAPTER
During 2025, we lovingly revamped Aloë There. The bathrooms were renovated, the entire property was repainted inside and out, and interior designer Martelucia White helped us create a fresh, timeless look while preserving the warmth and soul of the original home.
Her husband, Jandré White, handled the painting and coordinated Deon and his building team.
Beautiful new lighting was installed by Inex Lighting in Bredasdorp, while the blinds were supplied by Windovert Overberg in Bredasdorp. Both a family owned business.
And then came 13 May 2026.
A date that will forever be remembered by the people of Malgas and everyone who loves the Breede River.
The flood.
We were in Italy when the nightmare unfolded, unable to do anything from thousands of kilometres away.
The bottom floor of 390 Aloë There was devastated. Mud covered everything. Furniture was filled with river silt and parts of the inside roof were destroyed.
Yet somehow, almost miraculously, so much survived.
Not one cup. Not one glass. Not even a glass salad bowl was broken.
The glass pictures inside Dad’s bar remained intact. His beloved bar counter survived. His railway-sleeper cabinet with its glass doors survived.
And the memories survived.
To our rescue came Ryan Pienaar and his family, who went above and beyond to help us. His People stayed at the property, the enormous clean-up began, and an incredible team worked tirelessly to bring 390 Aloë There back to life.
The property was repainted inside and out. The damaged tiles were removed and replaced with our carefully chosen tiles from Stiles. Electricity was reconnected. The lighting was saved where possible and new blinds were installed.
Then came a brand-new kitchen, beautifully designed with Lauren from Harewood Kitchens, whom I discovered through the Malgas Koop en Verkoop group. She did an incredible job of giving the kitchen — and the home — a whole new feeling.
Outside, we removed the old cottage and created something completely new:
A BEAUTIFUL BOMA UNDER THE STARS
A place for family and friends to gather around the fire, share stories, laugh, relax and watch the Breede River flowing nearby.
And then came another deeply emotional moment.
Ryan and Dezi managed to save two precious photographs of my Dad. They were badly affected by the flood, but they rescued them and even had the damaged frame restored.
Today, those two photographs hang proudly once again in Dad’s bar.
My Dad passed away on 4 November 2023.
Sadly, he never lived to see what 390 Aloë There has become.
But standing inside the home today, surrounded by the things he chose, bought and built with his own hands, I cannot help but feel that somehow…
Dad is still here.
Perhaps he was watching over the house during the flood.
Because the things that meant so much to him survived.
His glasses.
His bar.
His railway-sleeper cabinet.
His memories.
And his home.
FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS
On 13 May 2026, 390 Aloë There stood beneath the force of the Breede River flood.
On 11 September 2026, she opened her doors again.
Stronger.
More beautiful.
And carrying even more stories.
Aloë There Guest House sleeps 6 guests and has two additional day beds upstairs on the enclosed patio.
It is a place to slow down, breathe deeply, watch the river, gather around the fire and make memories of your own.
Because 390 Aloë There isn’t simply a holiday home.
She is a home built by Dad, protected by love, restored by family and friends, and ready to welcome you.
Come stay.
Come relax.
Come make memories beside the Breede River.
