Never ask your clients, “What’s your budget?”

I watched someone lose control of a deal with that one question.

The client came in excited.
Clear problem. Ready to move.

Everything was going smooth…

until he asked,
“So… what’s your budget?”

You could feel the shift.

The client leaned back a little.
Paused.
Threw out a number.

A low one.

And just like that… the whole conversation shrank to fit it.

Now instead of talking about results,
he started cutting things out.

“Okay, we can remove this…”
“We can simplify that…”
“We’ll adjust this part…”

Piece by piece, the offer got smaller.

Weaker.

Less valuable.

And the worst part?

The client didn’t even seem more excited.

Because deep down, they knew…

This wasn’t the best solution.
It was just the one that fit the number.

That’s when it clicked:

He didn’t price the work…

He let the client decide what it was worth.

So we changed one thing.

No more asking for budgets.

Now he says:

“Based on what you want to achieve, this is what we recommend.”

And then he stops talking.

No shrinking.
No adjusting on the fly.

Some people say no.

But the ones who say yes?

They buy into the result… not the number.

Because clients don’t tell you your value.

They test if you believe it.
