MADE IT IN LAUNCESTON

Launceston has produced remarkable people - and their stories deserve to be seen.

Some of our great achievers have already been recognised in different ways across our city. Others deserve greater public recognition. What we are missing is an organised and visible way of bringing these stories together.

Made It In Launceston would create a coordinated program of public recognition across Launceston - through installations, plaques, public art, place names and displays that residents and visitors can discover throughout our city.

Imagine young Launcestonians walking through their own community and discovering the stories of people who grew up here and went on to win Olympic gold medals, captain national sporting teams, excel in academia, build successful businesses, contribute to public life and make their mark on Australia and the world.

These stories shouldn’t be hidden away. They should be part of the experience of our city.

This isn’t about replacing the recognition that already exists. It’s about building on it, filling the gaps and presenting our achievements in a way that inspires the next generation.

A throwback to a different era - when responsible financial management was simply expected of those entrusted with public money.

On 8 May 1985, the distinct local government councils of Launceston City, St Leonards, and Lilydale were amalgamated to form the modern City of Launceston.

Prior to 1985, residents in suburbs like Newnham, Mayfield, and Rocherlea paid rates to separate surrounding municipalities. The amalgamation forced a complete consolidation of different municipal rating systems, base assessment values, and service charges into a single unified city framework.

This election matters for our Northern and Eastern suburbs.

Responsible financial management and better project delivery mean less money lost to waste and cost blowouts — and more money available for the family and community projects our suburbs actually need.
Better parks, playgrounds, roads, community facilities and local infrastructure.

It’s about making every ratepayer dollar go further and ensuring our suburbs get their fair share.

If families are making tough decisions around the kitchen table, council should be prepared to make tough decisions around the council table too.

✅ Major projects without sufficient oversight. Ratepayers expect projects like the Albert Hall and Princess Theatre upgrades to be delivered on time and on budget. Over $22,000,000.

✅ Councillor lunches costing around $40,000 per year. Most working people buy their own lunch. Councillors should lead by example.

✅ Discretionary travel and conferences. Every trip should have a clear benefit to ratepayers and be publicly justified.

Launceston should be ambitious and keep investing in our city. But major projects must be backed by strong planning, financial discipline and accountability.

My plan is about delivering more for ratepayers - ON TIME and ON BUDGET.

✅ 1. REALISTIC BUDGETS BEFORE PROJECTS BEGIN
Major projects should have properly developed costings, contingencies, timelines and risk assessments before Council commits ratepayer money. Get the numbers right before we start.

✅ 2. LOCK IN THE SCOPE, CONTROL THE EXTRAS
One of the biggest risks to project budgets is changing scope after work begins. Significant additions or variations should require a clear business case showing the cost, benefit and impact on the overall budget.

✅ 3. INDEPENDENT GATEWAY REVIEWS
For major projects, independent reviews at key stages should test whether the project is properly designed, costed, funded and ready to proceed before Council moves to the next stage.

✅ 4. EARLY WARNING ON COST BLOWOUTS
Council shouldn’t learn about serious problems when millions have already been spent Major projects should have clear financial triggers requiring immediate reporting to Councillors when costs or timelines begin moving off track.

✅ 5. STRONGER PROCUREMENT & CONTRACT
MANAGEMENT
Better tendering, stronger contracts and active management of variations can protect ratepayers. Where possible, we should also create genuine opportunities for competitive local businesses to participate.

If elected, I will continue to look at the evidence, defend private property rights, and protect your ability to choose how you heat your own home.

Whether it’s wood, electric, gas or another lawful option - I believe homeowners should have choice, not unnecessary interference.

I’ll support sensible, evidence-based rules that protect our community without taking reasonable choices away from property owners.
