Long before Capps’s Corners became the area we know today, it was home to the Capps family farm.

John Capps was known for his love of horses and roses, and despite the challenges of farm life, he found time to create the intricate latticework that decorated the family’s porch.

Believed to date back to the 1880s, this photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into everyday life in Muskoka more than a century ago.

Throwing it back to Muskoka in 1910, when summer tourism was beginning to shape the region we know and love today. 🌲

Visitors from Southern Ontario and the United States travelled by train to Gravenhurst, then continued their journey by steamship across Muskoka’s lakes.

Grand hotels, scenic shorelines, forests, and a summer filled with boating, tennis, croquet, dining, and dancing made Muskoka a sought-after seasonal escape.

This historic photo, “Muskoka Excursion,” was photographed by F. W. Micklethwaite in 1910 and offers a glimpse into the early days of Muskoka tourism.

More than a century later, the journey to Muskoka may look a little different, but the appeal of its lakes and forests remains.

Should you turn absolutely everything off when you close the cottage for winter? 🤔

Not necessarily.

Depending on your property, you may still need power for:

✔ Security cameras
✔ Temperature sensors
✔ Water-leak detectors
✔ Smoke and carbon monoxide alarms
✔ Internet equipment
✔ Sump pumps
✔ Other monitoring systems

The important part is knowing what your circuits actually control and what happens if the power goes out during the winter.

It’s also worth checking your insurance policy for any requirements around vacancy, heating, or property checks.

Two things you don’t want settling into your cottage over the winter, moisture and mice.

Before closing your Muskoka cottage, make sure bedding, towels, rugs, and other fabrics are completely dry. Remove accessible food and pet food, clean up crumbs, and take a look for obvious entry points around doors, plumbing openings, utilities, and the foundation.

The goal is simple, leave the cottage clean, dry, and a lot less inviting to unwanted winter visitors.
