Is your mortgage up for renewal this year? You're not alone. 🏡

The final wave of pandemic-era mortgages is now coming up for renewal. While more homeowners expect to manage the transition than they did a year ago, many are still feeling uncertain.

Royal LePage's 2026 Mortgage Renewal Survey found that 38% of homeowners expect their monthly mortgage payment to increase, down from 57% in early 2025. At the same time, one third of mortgage holders say they feel more anxious about their upcoming renewal than they did at their previous renewal.

The Bank of Canada announced today that it is maintaining its overnight policy rate at 2.25 per cent, with the Bank Rate at 2.5 per cent and the deposit rate at 2.20 per cent.

The decision comes as the global economy continues to navigate uncertainty, driven by high energy prices due to geopolitical events, and evolving US trade policy. Yet, despite these challenges, the Bank noted that Canada's economy is showing encouraging signs of improvement, with growth gaining momentum and inflation expected to gradually ease over the coming months.

Economic activity is projected to strengthen as consumer spending remains resilient, exports continue to recover, and business investment picks up. The Bank expects growth to broaden as economic activity strengthens.

Governor Tiff Macklem and the Governing Council emphasized that maintaining the current policy rate remains appropriate to support Canada's economic recovery while returning inflation sustainably to target. They reaffirmed that the Bank will continue to closely monitor domestic and global developments and stands ready to adjust monetary policy as needed to support economic stability and price confidence.
