Whether we want to admit it or not, summer is dwindling down and it's time to move into soup and sweater season (I'm not mad).

I read an article recently about the importance of the front porch in urban and suburban developments, and how they are less and less of a consideration in newer builds. I think that's a damn shame.

Front porches are more than an architectural feature: they have always provided an outdoor place for us to sit close to our yard, make neighbours visible to each other, and help foster a sense of community. These days, it's more common to see a basic set of stairs leading to the front door, and more elaborate back decks, which provide a sense of privacy and anonymity. There's something a little bit sad about that.

I think we should push to bring back the front porch! Bring back lazy mornings with coffee in hand (instead of phones), reading books in the fresh air, friendly casual conversation, and knowing our neighbour's names. Maybe front porches are a small step toward fixing some of the brokenness in today's society. And I mean, they're definitely pretty too.
