🏠 NB's 3% rent cap is staying put — at least for now.

Housing Minister David Hickey confirmed this week that the market indicators still justify keeping the cap in place, and the numbers back him up. While rents in most Canadian cities actually fell in early 2026, Fredericton saw a 5.1% increase in two-bedroom apartment costs — driven largely by tenant turnovers and new units where the cap doesn't apply. Against the backdrop of nearly 50% rent growth in NB over the past six years, Hickey's position is hard to argue with.

The province is also reviewing its Residential Tenancies Act, so further changes may still be on the horizon.

For renters, that's reassuring news in the short term. But it's also worth asking — if renting is going to stay relatively stable, is now actually a good time to think seriously about buying instead of waiting?
