One of the most common questions I hear from buyers is: besides the down payment, what else do I need to budget for?

A good rule of thumb is to set aside roughly 2.5 percent of the purchase price for closing costs. In Nova Scotia that includes the deed transfer tax (about 1.5 percent) along with legal fees and a few other expenses. Knowing this early means no surprises later.

Understanding the numbers takes the fear out of the process. That is a big part of what I do - making sure you always know what comes next.
