68 years ago today the Skyway opened. And it cost 15 cents to drive over it.
The backstory is kind of great. In April 1952 a freighter called the W.E. Fitzgerald, loaded with sand, crashed into the old bridge over the Burlington Canal. Which made a pretty good case for a bridge ships could just go under.
Premier Leslie Frost opened the Burlington Bay Skyway on October 30, 1958. 8,400 feet long, 210 feet up at the top. Tolls started November 10 at 15 cents a car and lasted until December 28, 1973. The twin bridge came along in 1985.
So be honest. Do you remember the toll booths, or is this news to you?
