Over the summer, we have taken the time to strengthen relationships through outings and activities that put us in new situations and allow for a different kind of understanding and connection.

From paddling to tours of local wineries and cideries to virtual escape rooms with remote team members, each group has found a way to have new adventures while solidifying existing relationships.

There were also treetop courses and ziplines, board games, in-person escape rooms, and a good number of meals together.

We learned about the Ride to Live and the Island Prostate Centre from a council member who was involved with the organization. After receiving a request for support and looking into the organization and all the good it does right here on the island, we were happy to start supporting their work.

It is a small but mighty organization, helping thousands of people on an annual basis. Every single dollar they raise goes directly back to supporting as many patients as they can.

A lot of that work runs through one person. The centre's Nurse Navigator guides patients and their families through diagnosis, treatment and everything that comes after.

That means answering questions about the disease and the options so there is less to be uncertain about, working through treatment choices so people can decide for themselves, building a prostate health plan that fits someone's actual life, and connecting them to the centre's own programs and to the support that exists around them.

That is the help that is hardest to find when you have just been diagnosed, and it is the reason we are glad to support them.

This year's Westcoast Motorcycle Ride To Live Vancouver Island runs on Sunday, September 13, starting and finishing at Enrico Winery in Mill Bay.

One Friday each month we hold Social Friday after work, an opportunity for team members to spend time laughing, talking and often doing an activity.

In the past we've had music bingo, games nights and group outings, and last Friday we had a special trivia night hosted by two of our team members.

Teams tested their knowledge in many areas, including sports, music, movies, and general knowledge. There were some feisty competitions and a good number of genial disagreements, but in the end, everyone agreed that it was a fantastic event.

While Proline supports and encourages these types of events, they wouldn't happen without the care and attention of the team members who spend their own time creating and sharing their creations with the team.

It is what makes this team special – their willingness to show up and create joy for each other. So grateful for Lauren and Sarah and all the others who do this on a regular basis!

So, you’ve been accused of breaking the Strata’s bylaws. Whether it’s a letter in the mail, or an e-mail in your inbox, receiving a bylaw letter is rarely a fun experience!

First, understand that a bylaw letter isn’t an automatic accusation of guilt. It’s a notification to you that the Strata has received a complaint about your unit, and an explanation as to which parts of the rules or bylaws may have been violated.

Letting you know that the Strata has received a complaint is the only way to engage you in the process of investigating that complaint and to get your side of the story.

The bylaw letter you receive will explain whether or not a fine is being considered against your unit. If no fine is being considered at this time, no response from you is necessary.

If, however, a fine is being considered, you should provide a response (either in writing, or by requesting a hearing), and your response will be reviewed by Council at their next meeting. The Strata cannot issue a fine without first allowing you this opportunity to respond to the complaint.

The ultimate goal of the bylaw enforcement process is to ensure peaceful living between neighbours. While it is never fun to receive a bylaw letter, remember that your Council is following the process set out in the Act, and take it as your opportunity to engage with your Council in finding a solution.

One thing the summer months give us is more time for reading, which our book club members appreciate!

After finishing The Starless Sea last quarter, we are now digging into Braiding Sweetgrass. While some books, like The Starless Sea, don't elicit much emotion or insight in the group, we still manage to have interesting conversations about far ranging topics, which help us know and understand each other better.

And we're confident that Braiding Sweetgrass will bring many insights and even better conversations!

The Parksville Beach Festival Sand Sculpture Exhibition is now open daily until August 16, from 9:30 am to 8:30 pm!

Happy BC Day, Island neighbours. It is the first long weekend of August, which around here means the beaches fill up, the barbecues come out, and the buildings we manage from Victoria to Campbell River go a little quiet as everyone heads outside.

Our offices are closed Monday for the holiday, and we will be back Tuesday morning.

However you spend it – on the water, in the garden, or not moving from a lawn chair – we hope it is a good one.
