The Golden Whisk has been awarded! Last week our SWAG (Social & Wellness Action Group) hosted our annual Goldengiving event, an amalgamation of the Golden Whisk and Thanksgiving lunch. Congratulations to Braonain and Lauren, who tied for the whisk this year with their stew and scalloped potatoes!

We used to have both a cooking competition/potluck event at which the Golden Whisk would be awarded to the person with the winning dish, voted on by their peers, as well as an annual Thanksgiving lunch, but that number of food-based gatherings in one month was a little excessive even for us at Proline.

Thus was born the Goldengiving event. Lots of food, a little competition and an abundance of gratitude for a great tradition that through creativity and a willingness to change has morphed into something even better!

One of the bonuses that come out of the event is the recipes that get shared afterwards.

We’re not bucking the trend. Yes, we know that every feed is filled with posts about gratitude and being thankful, since this is literally the point of this holiday.

And we’re jumping right on that bandwagon, because it feels good to recognize and celebrate all that we are grateful for, even when everyone else is doing it too. It’s a trend we can get behind!

We’re grateful for a team that takes care of each other and themselves, that is open to learning, even when they make mistakes, who are willing to talk about real or difficult things if those are the things that need to be talked about, who show up with compassion, patience, and when necessary, strength and purpose.

And who laugh and play and celebrate together too.

We are grateful for the teachers who help us continually learn and grow (relentless incrementalism on display!)

We are grateful for the clients who trust us and work with us to take care of each of their homes and communities, and for the volunteers who spend hours doing things that will never be celebrated or even seen, but that quietly make each of their communities tick along.

There’s a great little event happening in Nanaimo tomorrow, and we’re proud to be sponsoring it! The first Downtown Nanaimo Harvest Festival is on Saturday, October 10, from 2 to 6 pm at Maffeo Sutton Park.

The Spirit of Nanaimo Society is hosting it, and we love how they put it: “Community isn’t only about helping one another when something is wrong. It’s also about creating opportunities for people to simply enjoy being together.”

There will be free hot chocolate, a scarecrow contest, fall bracelet making and crafts for all ages, a harvest photo backdrop, a community gratitude wall, and Harvest Trivia, the part we’re sponsoring. If you’re able, bring coats, blankets, or new socks for their Community Warmth Initiative, which collects them for people in need.

Our team member Sam has decided to do a hard thing. He’s signed up for the 2026 Royal Victoria Marathon, doing the Outway Half Marathon and in doing so has chosen to support Habitat for Humanity as part of the event. The race is this Sunday, October 11.

As Sam shared with our team, “I haven't done much long distance running since the last time Andy and Paul were kind enough to train me and support me trying to do a charity initiative, but I really want to give it another go.

“Running is something I've always wanted to do well, it feels like adventuring for me, and much to my old man knees' dismay, I am not going to stop working towards accomplishing long distance running.”

And bonus, when you're training in the early morning, you get some epic sunrise shots!

We love food. And we want to share food with others.

All through October, we’re running a food drive at our head office in Langford, and everything we collect goes to the Goldstream Food Bank at the end of the month. You can find out more about the food bank at goldstreamfoodbank.org.

Lots of organizations focus on food donations in December, but this is a year-round issue for so many people in our community. And since October is such a food-focused month, with Thanksgiving dinners and harvest celebrations, we thought it would be the perfect time.

Not sure what to bring? The food bank’s list includes lots of family staples: cereal, peanut butter and jam, fruit cups and canned fruit, granola bars and other school snacks, pasta and pasta sauce, and canned soup. Everything needs to be unopened, and they can’t take anything homemade.

Drop off at 888 Attree Avenue, Monday to Friday, 9:30 to 4:30. Please help us feed people!

On September 30, our offices are closed for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and Orange Shirt Day, in recognition of the history this day honours.

In 2013, a group of former residential school students and their families drew inspiration from the story of Phyllis Webstad, of her experience in the residential school system, and notably, how on her first day her precious new orange shirt was taken from her.

Their early projects laid the groundwork for what later became known as Orange Shirt Day, commemorated each year on September 30 to mark the time of year in which children were historically taken from their homes.

This movement brought increasing awareness to the history of more than 160 years of suffering of Indigenous children and families, and the true experience of the residential school system. In 2021, the federal government finally recognized September 30 as a federal statutory holiday.

True reconciliation must be practiced individually as well as on a community level. September 30 is an opportunity to solemnly reflect on this aspect of Canadian history, and reflect on the ongoing effects of the residential school system – honouring those who survived, and those who did not.

There are many meaningful ways to support and engage with Orange Shirt Day and build up the Indigenous communities near you:
– supporting local Indigenous-owned businesses (https://indigenousbusinessdirectoryvi.com/),
– donating time and/or money to Orange Shirt Day (https://orangeshirtday.org/support/) or other grassroots organizations,
– educating those around you on the history of September 30,
– or simply wearing an orange shirt and reflecting on how you can practice reconciliation in your daily life.

Even if you haven't experienced one, you've no doubt heard stories about strata floods. Not every flood can be prevented, but there are some steps you can take to make one less likely, and less damaging if it does happen.

We put our water do's and don'ts in the Winter Proline Pulse, and we thought it would be helpful to share them here too, one topic per slide.

The first step is to know if you have a water shut-off for your unit, and where to find it! If you're not sure, your strata council, property manager, or landlord can tell you.

Some buildings, especially older ones, only have one shut-off for each floor or for the whole building. If your building is one of them, make sure you know who to call in an emergency so the water can be shut off.

We’re squeezing out all the fun from our summer! Last Saturday, our annual summer(ish) BBQ brought together our team and families for a whole lot of fun and games in beautiful weather.

Our game of California kickball, with players from the ages of 5 to 45, went on until the sun went down and the moon came up, and we finally headed home by moonlight. We were having so much fun that we forgot to take pictures (much to the chagrin of our socials team 😜), so here’s another fond memory instead.

We’ve gathered together for a summer BBQ for at least 17 years – the kids have grown up, some faces have changed, but the spirit remains the same: taking time to enjoy each other’s company and share some music, some laughs, and always food.

Thanks to our SWAG (Social & Wellness Action Group) for creating this opportunity for fun and connection. It might be time to say goodbye to the summer months, but we can make the feeling last just a little bit longer!

Condominium Home Owners Association of BC - CHOA's 50th anniversary conference was a great success! Such a valuable opportunity to both learn and connect with others involved in the industry, both professionally and as volunteers.

While it can often feel like an isolating and confusing experience when you’re dealing with challenges or navigating a new and uncertain situation, knowing that there is a community around you that can offer experience and expertise has the power to change the experience to a positive one.
