When should you start thinking about furniture in a renovation?

Earlier than you might think.

We were recently featured in the Fall issue of Spruce Magazine, where I had the opportunity to talk about why furniture and décor shouldn't be left until the very end of a renovation or new build.

The pieces you choose can influence everything from room proportions and circulation to window treatments, lighting and electrical planning.

For us, the goal isn't simply to furnish a finished house. It's to think about the complete interior from the beginning so that all of the layers work together.

Can we all admit something?

Every custom home is starting to look like it belongs to the same family.

White oak.
White walls.
Black windows.
Quartz with soft grey veining.

Repeat.

Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with any of those choices. I've used every one of them in the right project.

But somewhere along the way, we've started confusing timeless with identical.

When I walk into a home, I don't want to be impressed by how closely it resembles the latest trend.

I want to leave with a sense of who lives there.

The books on the shelves.
The art they've collected.
The colour they weren't afraid to use.
The piece of furniture with a story behind it.

Those are the things that make a house memorable.

Maybe the goal shouldn't be designing a home that everyone will love.

Maybe the goal should be designing a home that feels unmistakably like you.

This bathroom proves you don't need to rip everything out to create something beautiful.

Builder-grade bathrooms often feel...forgettable. White walls. Flat cabinet doors. Basic mirror. Standard hardware. Nothing is wrong with them—they just don't have any personality.

The good news? You don't always need a full renovation to completely change the feeling of the space.

In this bathroom we transformed it by layering in character:

✨ Added moulding to the flat cabinet doors for a custom furniture look.
🎨 Painted the vanity a soft blue-green instead of replacing it.
🪵 Installed wall moulding to give the room architectural interest.
🌿 Added wallpaper to bring warmth, texture and personality.
🪞 Replaced the builder-grade mirror with a curved gold mirror.
🤍 Hung full-length drapery instead of a basic shower curtain for a softer, more finished look.
✨ Swapped out the hardware for warm brass to tie everything together.

None of these changes on their own are dramatic.

Together, they completely transformed the space.

The best interiors aren't created by spending the most money—they're created by thoughtfully layering details that make a home feel personal.

A beautiful room isn't created by cabinetry and flooring alone.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make during a custom build or renovation is treating furnishings as an afterthought.

The reality?

Furniture, lighting, window treatments, artwork, and styling are not the final layer of design.

They're part of the design from the very beginning.

When we design a home, we're considering how every space will ultimately be furnished and lived in long before construction is complete.

Will the dining room comfortably host ten guests?

Will the lighting feel intimate during dinner parties?

Will the furnishings complement the architecture rather than compete with it?

Will the room feel warm and welcoming when everything is finally in place?

These are the questions that transform a house into a home.

The most beautiful spaces aren't just built.

They're thoughtfully layered.

The most beautiful kitchens aren’t only about finishes.

They’re about balance.

Hard materials like tile, stone, cabinetry, and lighting need softer layers to keep a space from feeling cold or overly polished.

That’s where styling matters.

Natural wood.
Collected objects.
Artwork.
Texture.
Shape.
A sense that the home evolved over time instead of being installed all at once.

The goal is never to fill a space.
It’s to create warmth, personality, and moments that feel quietly lived in.

Those final layers are often what make a kitchen feel like home.
