🍻 October 12, 1984 — A New Gathering Place Opens in Horsefly!

Some places become more than just a business. They become part of a community's story.

And in Horsefly, the Anvil Pub is one of those places. ❤️

On Friday, October 12, 1984, the Anvil Pub celebrated its grand opening, welcoming neighbours, friends and visitors for a weekend of music, food and good old-fashioned Cariboo hospitality.

Built and owned by Nora Mark and her family of Horsefly, the pub was clearly a labour of love.

The opening weekend featured live music by Cal Riendeau on Friday, followed by Chris Elwick and Geoff Patenaude on Saturday.

There were door prizes, dancing, a pool table and even a 28-channel satellite television — quite the attraction in 1984! 📺

And nobody was going hungry.

Saturday's specials included bacon, eggs and pancakes for breakfast, submarine sandwiches for lunch, and spaghetti with salad and garlic toast for dinner.

But one of my favourite things about this old advertisement is what's at the bottom.

Local businesses filled the page with congratulations and good wishes. From drywall and plumbing to electrical work, stained glass and mechanical services, so many people had a hand in bringing this new gathering place to life.

That's the Cariboo I love.

A new business opens, and the neighbours turn out to wish it well.

Forty-two years later, this advertisement is a lovely little piece of Horsefly history and a reminder that a community's story isn't just written in history books. Sometimes it's written on a menu, told across a pool table or remembered through an evening of live music.

🍿🎬 Remember the Starlite Drive-In Theatre in Williams Lake?

There was a time when a night at the movies meant piling into the car, heading south of Williams Lake and watching a film under the stars!

The Starlite Drive-In Theatre was located about five miles south of town on the Cariboo Highway, and for generations of Cariboo residents, it was much more than a place to watch a movie.

It was date night, family night and a favourite gathering place for teenagers and friends. ❤️

The theatre's history dates back to 1957, when it originally opened as the H & H Drive-In. By the early 1960s, it had become known as the Starlight Drive-In, with room for approximately 300 cars.

And just look at the admission prices on this wonderful old programme!

🎟️ Children — 25¢
🎟️ Children under school age — FREE!

Imagine taking the whole family to the movies for just a few dollars!

For many who grew up in Williams Lake during the 1960s and 1970s, the drive-in was part of growing up in the Cariboo. The movies were entertaining, but sometimes the real attraction was seeing who else had shown up!

Around 1900, Harry and Alva Walters paused for this photograph on a simple wooden swing outside Horsefly’s old City Hotel.

The hotel had already been part of the community for years. Established in 1886 and owned by Alex Meiss and his wife, Matilda, the City Hotel came along when Horsefly was still closely tied to its Gold Rush beginnings.

A hotel in those days was much more than a place to spend the night.

It was where travellers arrived dusty from the road, where miners and ranchers exchanged news, where neighbours compared weather and crop stories, and where someone passing through could find a hot meal and perhaps hear half the news in the district before supper was finished.

By the time Harry and Alva Walters were here, those log walls had already seen plenty of life.

The original City Hotel remained part of Horsefly for nearly 60 years before it was destroyed by fire in 1945.
