Richards journey in masonry care and repair using lime mortars and matching stone began in the North East whilst conserving and restoring many Grade A listed buildings churches and castles for a leading masonry company. He moved to edinburgh to support his family trading independently as LIMERICH and has slowly built up a strong and quality business with an enviable reputation and portfolio of completed contracts for individuals, organisations and companies.

A riveting time was had last weekend at the annual conference and gathering of the The Building Limes Forum meeting old friends and making new ones on our journey. Rich fair enjoyed the attention of the captive masses sharing some methods we’ve used to apply our legacy of craft, who’d have known he’d enjoy the lime light so much! Always a joy to hear Nigel Copesey and a delight to hear from Mike Penderey’s experiments in lime on my old patch in the N/E rural Aberdeenshire but the highlight was Pips delivery of the baker memorial this year, what a kind and clever woman, her care, passion and organisation has benefitted the craft and built environment beyond measure. Good to see the team at Scottish Lime Centre Trust and this years SPAB | The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings fellows and scholars let their hair down not to mention my old pal LIME MASTER ensuring the craic was always on point and meeting the main man Jeremy from Jeremy Mistretta was the cream on the cake, hope you enjoy the hoody mate. Take some steps back through a stone ‘render’ repair up with the gods on Princes street.
We still get goosebumps when we are asked to work in these iconic buildings. Working with a supportive principal contractor ‘GRAHAM’ on a tier 1 commercial contract can be arduous in terms of compliance but it seems this is where we find ourselves now and have comfort in their ambitions align with ours of doing the right job ‘once’ and being paid for the work we have all agreed is the right course of action for the building. Of course there’s a debate over replace or repair here and at Limerich we will advocate the retention of historic fabric as a leading philosophy. We have vehicles coming from edinburgh but this really suits locals to Pollok as the new bicycle network has just been opened. 🤓

Stonemason/lime worker needed for IMMEDIATE start here at Po***ck stables. Good rates paid.

MUST have CSCS card - non negotiable.

Lots of rubble indenting using reclaimed stone onsite, lots of chimneys to be rebuilt in new and old stone and lots and lots of packing and pinning/stabilising masonry in hot limes prior to pointing required.

Last week we (Rosie and I) undertook a building fabric inspection at Law’s Close, a 16th-century merchant’s house at the east end of Kirkcaldy High Street in Fife. Despite the building’s long history, its core structure and garden remain largely intact and inside there a number of rare surviving examples of 16th and 17th century interior decoration. The building was acquired by SHBT in 1986 and painstakingly restored over a 20-year period using natural lime-rich non hydraulic natural materials and traditional techniques.

Today, Law’s Close operates as a commercial business and retail hub and is home to a variety of small businesses. The ground floor retail units are occupied by two independent, family-run shops, Home of Hopecroft and Merchant’s House Café. The garden is available to hire as an outdoor event venue and the upper floors offer flexible office accommodation to let for those looking for a characterful and unique workplace.

The condition of this expertly conserved building today is testament to the architects who had the late great Rory Young lead the repairs over 30 years ago now and as you can see are fairing very well, especially so if you consider these were all putty lime mixes. Kudos to the wonderful for being the most considerate custodians of these precious buildings standing strong and healthy like time capsules into our rich heritage past.
