Confirmation of the presence of efflorescence likely from the mooshy ground further exasperated by the unconnected downpipe directly outpouring into it, the slates restrict any drying ability and the cement render traps the moisture then pushes it further up the wall! Modern solutions in poor effect. This wee cracker can be rectified with a little bit of lime rich magic, watch this space!
Last few pics were an utter delight, I love a dilapidated farm building, amongst the rusting agricultural equipment I found some lime torching underside of the slates and some remnants of limewash maintenance to the dairy sheds. Lush

It starts with a specification, then the design and attention to detail ZMArchitecture and finally the ex*****on 😎. The Holy trinity of conservation.
Some jobs just deserve all you can give, we gave it our all. This was a classic example of DAMP TOWER SYNDROME in a blooming rain forest in the west coast of Scotland!. Not only is the tower dry and warm now, it’s bloody gorgeous!!

Fail we may, Sail we must.

I highly recommend you come stay here💛book through the landmark trust website.

Research and development has led us to be able to limewash a 600m2 medieval castle in 7 days thanks to easy rigging to chimneys accessed by crowsteps and deviations by means of the Merlons and crenels. Once on the ropes we can protect the windows, then using our from we steam clean the walls to gently remove surface dirt and organic providing a stable base, it’s all in the prep!
Now for the application, again, all from the ropes we use a small pump compressor and hopper bucket to spray our custom made hot mix in 2 close successive passes. This is developed learning over near 3 decades of what works best whilst sticking staunchly to the use of hot mix lime but utilising modern advances in technology to execute our craft with confidence of longevity in the most exposed and glorious of locations. To think we can do this in a tenth of the time and a tenth of the cost by comparison to the cost of scaffolding this building alone fills me with pride in our journey and confidence that our legacy of care for our traditional built heritage and the health of the buildings in our care remains strong for decades to come. We’ve come a long way since limewashing Jeremy Irons Kilcoe Castle.

Back on 2007 this was my biggest contract being self employed I had 6 weeks to lime render and lime wash the carriage house here at Loch Lomond Golf club with the help of some good friends I inducted in the world of lime work. We stayed on site and grafted, thanks to some really well blended sand and hot lime mix we managed to get the building straightened with ashlar jointing struck over differing bed heights and lengths. Was a bit quick getting the limewash on but we managed and the club hasn’t done any maintenance since then and it’s looking fine!
I recall vividly the panic in the room as I regaled the aesthetic beauty of the double refractive light glow that is unique to a limewash building in the sun yet when the golf open was broadcast and I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see my building GLOW UP on tv, they only went and built the spectator stand right in front of it for the 18th hole.
Hey ho

‘our legacy, set in stone’

Meet the Husqvarna K4000 Cut-n-Break—the ultimate “deep diver” for cutting into masonry.
Forget hitting a wall (literally)—this beast lets you cut up to 400mm deep, yes folks, that’s 40cm, just under half a metre from just one side.
The “Cut-n-Break” Magic: Twin high-speed blades score the masonry, then you just pop out the core with the breaking tool. Rinse and repeat until you’re 16 inches deep! 🌊
Indoor Friendly: Pure electric power (2.7 kW) means zero fumes. Perfect for basement projects or tight urban spaces where you don’t want to choke on petrol exhaust. 🏠✨
Precision Pro: The adjustable guard lets you get right up against floors and walls for that perfect flush finish, while the 9” blades ensure you don’t overcut your corners.
Clean & Green: It’s got a built-in water kit to keep the dust down and your lungs happy, plus it’s way cheaper to run than traditional deep-cut saws. 💧💨
