Why is summer the best season to spot hidden damp?
1. Dry conditions reveal underlying issues - Damp may not be active, but staining and damaging are easier to see.
2. No rain... or less rain at least = Clearer diagnosis. This helps to distinguish between condensation and penetrating damp.
3. Easier to inspect external defects - Cracks, poor pointing, and brickwork are more visible.
4. Damp patches do not get masked by moisture - Winter conditions can make everything look uniformly damp.
5. Better access to lofts and roof spaces - Safer and easier to inspect in dry and bright weather.
6. Timber is also drier. This makes any signs of damage, like woodworm or rot easier to identify.
7. Ventilation habits are more overt. When you have your windows open the airflow gives you the signs of how your property, essentially 'breathes.'
8. Helps identify past and current issues - Staining, tide marks, and any previous repairs stand out much more visibly.
9. Summer is the ideal time for preventative action. It is far better to treat issues now, before the Autumn and Winter months make them much worse.
