Get to Know the Team
This week we’re introducing Chris, one of our Directors at Hallas & Co.
We asked Chris a few questions about his career, what motivates him and the advice he’d give to anyone starting out in surveying.
Did you always see yourself working in this field?
“Once I properly understood what a Chartered Building Surveyor actually did, I was hooked. I came from a contracting background and started out as a site labourer, so I had the chance to physically take buildings apart and help put them back together again. I enjoyed seeing how buildings were made, how they failed, and how the detail mattered. When I realised building surveying combined that practical experience with technical problem solving, it felt like the right fit.”
What’s been your most rewarding career moment so far?
“Being involved in the fire safety assessment of a large high-rise building in Reading stands out. After abseiling the building to inspect the cladding, I identified several significant issues. We then worked through the assessment and remediation process, securing funding for the works. The remediation is now complete, and every time I drive past, it’s rewarding to know I played a part in making the building safer for the people who live there.”
What do you look for in someone joining your team?
“Curiosity, attention to detail and a willingness to get stuck in. Technical knowledge is important, but so is attitude. I like working with people who ask good questions, take pride in their work and always want to keep improving.”
What piece of advice has shaped the way you work today?
“It’s a classic one: ‘measure twice, cut once’. In surveying and fire safety, taking the time to check the detail properly at the start makes all the difference. Good advice comes from careful investigation, clear thinking and not jumping to conclusions too quickly.”
