🐾 Pet laws just changed — here’s the lowdown
Landlords can’t just say “no pets” anymore. Since 1 December 2025, tenants can ask to keep a pet and landlords need an actual good reason to say no.
Quick rundown:
• Tenant wants a pet? They ask, landlord has 21 days to respond.
• Landlords can ask for a pet bond (up to 2 extra weeks’ rent) for new pets.
• Already had an approved pet before Dec 2025? You’re all good — no new bond, no re-asking.
• Tenants still cover any pet damage beyond normal wear and tear.
• Assist dogs are exempt from all of this — no consent or bond needed.
