As was widely expected, the OCR has risen 25 basis points to 2.75%.

The big issue which is driving the OCR hike at the moment is inflation. Inflation is still above the RBNZ's 1–3% target range.

The RBNZ Monetary Policy Committee agreed that gradually removing monetary stimulus is appropriate to return inflation to the 2 percent target mid-point while supporting growth and employment.

This decision reduces the risk that the OCR needs to increase by more later. Future policy decisions will depend on the Committee’s judgement of the balance of risks to medium-term inflation.

August brought an interesting shift in the Auckland housing market, with prices holding firm as winter came to an end, an unusual trend that could signal a change ahead.

🏡 $955,000 median sales price, up 1.6% from June
📈 $1,098,487 average sales price, up 1.6% year-on-year
🔑 787 properties sold during August

“The Auckland market in August showed signs that it may be nearing a tipping point,” said Peter Thompson, Managing Director of Barfoot & Thompson.
