🏡 Could cohousing be right for you?

Knowing your neighbours. Sharing a meal, a garden or a helping hand. Having your own home, with more opportunities to connect just beyond your front door.

If that sounds appealing, cohousing could be a good fit. It also means contributing to community life, caring for shared spaces and thinking about what works for the whole neighbourhood alongside what works for your own household. Some decisions are made together, which takes a willingness to listen, compromise and consider different needs.

If you’d prefer to keep neighbourhood involvement to a minimum, or making decisions collectively doesn’t appeal to you, cohousing may be less suited to you. And that’s okay.

🟡 PAPARANGI COHOUSING IS TAKING SHAPE! 🟡

An early-September weekend brought the Paparangi Founding Circle together for a cohousing hui in Pōneke Wellington to connect, learn, and imagine life in their future neighbourhood.

Circle Living Co-Founder Simone Woodland joined this wonderful group of prospective neighbours, facilitating workshops on community values and Sociocracy, and exploring what living well together in cohousing could look like.

One of the weekend’s highlights? The neighbourhood reveal - with 13 of the 29 homes now reserved! Seeing names on the plan brought a new sense of excitement, and walking the whenua together on Sunday made the possibilities feel even more tangible.

There’s a strong core group forming around Paparangi, with plenty of enthusiasm for the community they’re helping to build.

The group also heard from Rodney Barber of the Newlands Resilience Group (), whose work shows the difference connected, prepared neighbourhoods can make.

🟡 JOIN THE PAPARANGI FOUNDING CIRCLE 🟡

Interested in being part of this growing neighbourhood? We warmly welcome new members to the Paparangi Founding Circle and take part in our unique community-building process.

This is a chance to get to know your potential neighbours, explore how to live well together, and work out whether Paparangi Cohousing is right for you. Taking part is a required step towards reserving a home, and participation fees apply.

If you’re drawn to a life with more connection, belonging, and resilience, we’d love to hear from you. Register your interest through the form in the comments, or send us an email.

We’ve pledged to support Homefullness! 🏡💛

Hosted by Zola Rose, Homefullness is a show exploring affordable, collective and regenerative housing in Aotearoa and beyond. It brings together stories and lessons from people creating cohousing, ecovillages, cooperative housing and more.

The crowdfunding campaign aims to fund another year of monthly episodes, helping more people discover what’s possible and how to get involved.

We're so grateful to Purposely Podcast for having our Co-Founder Simone Woodland on to share her story 🙏

Simone opens up about her journey toward creating community - from her father bringing neighbours together with street parties on their childhood cul-de-sac in Bristol, to visioning and building a cohousing neighbourhood in Golden Bay that she now lives in, and a drive to make cohousing possible in other locations too. It's a reminder that the desire to bring people together has been with her a long time.

At the heart of it all is something simple: we believe better neighbourhoods make a better world. When people know who lives next door, learn to communicate well, look out for each other, and share in the small things - that's where real community starts.

Thank you again to the Purposely team for the thoughtful conversation.

The amount of interest we're getting tells us something.

People want a different way to live. Somewhere they can be near friends, feel like they belong, know the people next door, and have more connection in everyday life.

The kind of connection that happens on your way to the letterbox. Hanging the washing. On the walk to the car. Easy. Unplanned. Real.

So that's what we're building.

At Circle Living, we design neighbourhoods around connection - shared spaces, thoughtful layouts, and a community that's actually built to bring people together.

Feeling like your life could use more connection and belonging?
Cohousing could be exactly what you're looking for.

What makes people excited about cohousing? 🤔

For one of our Founding Circle members, the answer was:
“Returning my roots.” 🌱

For some people, cohousing is about discovering community for the first time.
For others, it feels like coming home to something they already know. 🏡🌱

Have you ever lived in a community or neighbourhood that felt like home? What did you love about it? 👇

Canada, here she comes! ✈️

That's right, Simone is officially on her way across the oceans to Canada this week! She is joining the Coralus (un)Summit 2026 for a transformational gathering of women from all around the world.

We are so excited that Simone was invited, and look forward to discovering the gems that emerge. She will be adventuring, connecting, wayfinding, weaving community, reflecting and visioning, playing and creating - and bringing that back down to earth in her mahi at Circle Living ✨️

What makes people excited about cohousing? 🤔

For one of our Founding Circle members, it’s the chance to live intergenerationally.

And we think that’s pretty special. ❤️

Imagine a neighbourhood where children grow up knowing their older neighbours, where different generations share everyday moments, skills, stories and support - because they’re part of the same community.

1 in 5 New Zealanders is now aged 60+, according to Stats NZ.
So what if our neighbourhoods were designed to bring generations together, rather than separate them?

That’s one of the things we love about cohousing: creating communities where there’s room for every stage of life.

💬 What excites you about intergenerational living?

There’s something special about witnessing a group of people start to become a community. 💛

Recently, some of the Paparangi Cohousing Founding Circle got together for an informal evening of connection and conversation, to get to know each other a little better. A big thank you to our "community ambassadors" in Pōneke Wellington, Founding Circle members themselves, who are creating space for the group to connect in this way.

Building a cohousing neighbourhood starts long before the houses are built - it starts with the relationships between the people who will call it home.

There is still time to join this neighbourhood. More details on our website.

🏘 Cohousing is a new concept in New Zealand. We realise that the idea of living differently may be something you are feeling called to, but you have thoughts. Lots and lots of thoughts: fears, worries, ideas, questions. We get that.

But what if it all worked out? What if the benefits outweighed any discomfort? What if you really love it? Don't forget to ruminate on all the potential gains and joys as well 😊
