Over the past few days, two longtime family friends have lost a parent, and it has brought back so many memories.

Growing up, our friends’ parents often became part of our lives in ways we didn’t fully understand at the time. They welcomed us into their homes, fed us, laughed with us, corrected us, encouraged us and helped shape the people we became. Years later, we still remember their voices, their laughter and the way they made us feel.

Then we grow up, have children of our own and hope we are fortunate enough to find friendships like those again—families who love our children, cheer them on and leave an imprint on their hearts.

Sometimes we don’t realize how deeply someone touched our life until the memories come flooding back. What a blessing it is to have known people who became part of our story—and what a beautiful legacy to leave behind. ❤️

Today, on Grandparents Day, I can’t help but think about just how blessed I truly was. I didn’t have only one or two sets of grandparents—I had three sets who loved me exactly as I was.

They all came to our house. They all got along. And they gave me so much more than love. They taught me, encouraged me, inspired me, made me laugh and sometimes made me cry. They taught me to give, share, trust and believe.

My memories are filled with games, golf, swimming, yardwork and homemade ice cream. Pepperidge Farm Ginger Man cookies dipped in hot tea while we talked around the breakfast table. Handwritten letters, Ghost in the Graveyard, long walks, trips to the Topeka Zoo for snow cones and cotton candy—and even a trip to Asia.

They taught me how to care for roses, play cards and use proper etiquette, decorum and tact. There were Fourth of July parades at Collins Park, new sneakers for school, Sunday dinners, Kentucky Fried Chicken picnics in the park and fireworks. They were there for birthday parties, school activities, nap times, table talks and all the ordinary moments that became some of my most treasured memories.

I had the very best of every world. I was seen, accepted, encouraged and deeply loved.

Grandma Jeanne (GG) and Granddad Bud, Grandma Pat and Grandpa Frank, and Grandma Dodie and Granddad Crary—I was truly blessed to be yours. You are all deeply loved, forever remembered and greatly missed. ❤️

And now, as Auddie to Jagger, I hope I can give him—and any other grandchildren I may be blessed with—the same unconditional love, encouragement, laughter and memories my grandparents gave me. If they grow up knowing they were always welcomed, always believed in and loved exactly as they are, then I will have passed along one of the greatest gifts ever given to me.
