The city has temporarily banned new artificial intelligence data centers while staff studies their potential effects and develops recommendations for regulating such facilities.

The Escondido City Council unanimously approved the 45-day moratorium at the recommendation of city staff. The measure prohibits new data centers and the expansion or intensification of existing facilities while pausing approvals of related entitlement and development permits.

A new 24-unit apartment complex operated by a nonprofit corporation dedicated to providing affordable housing broke ground Aug. 25.

Caritas Village Vista will consist of two three-story buildings with 12 units each, all designated as affordable housing. The project is planned for a vacant 1.1-acre lot surrounded by Plymouth Drive and Camino Corto, in a neighborhood just north of the Wave Waterpark.

The complex will offer one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts with a maximum capacity of 64 residents. The project will also include 25 parking spaces. A third, single-story building will house an on-site office, clubhouse, laundry facility and maintenance room. The development will encompass nearly 29,000 square feet.

The remaining portion of the late Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington’s Georgia estate has sold for about $6.58 million.

The property known as Free Bird’s Nest, named for the band’s most famous song, once spread across 68 acres in the city of Milton, about an hour north of Atlanta. It was originally offered in its entirety, when it was listed at the end of 2023 for $12 million, but at that size, it only attracted offers from developers looking to subdivide the land, which didn’t align with the future Rossington’s widow, Dale Krantz-Rossington, wanted for the property
