This is Don. And he's what makes Charlottesville such an awesome place to live.

Don has been our mailman for 20 years. On the first day we moved here from DC, up to our necks in boxes, he came to our door with a big smile on his face and a warm welcome. Acted like he had all the time for a chat, and wanted to introduce himself and meet us. After he left, we looked at each other and finally knew we'd absolutely made the right decision to move here.

Don set the tone for everything to come. I saw him most days, as my walking the dog almost always intersected somewhere with his route. He always had time to say hi. He always made me smile.

Last week, there was a send off party for him at the North Garden Fire Department. We went and so did countless others. And what was so cool was that everybody had their own story to tell: how he turned his jeep around and parked while a neighbor was walking because he saw someone he'd never seen before on the road and just wanted to make sure she was okay; how he'd stopped on his route to help an elderly woman take all of her groceries inside before resuming his route - there were so many stories. What a guy. And what a legacy.

Thanks for welcoming us way back when, Don, and for everything since. It's because of people like you that Cville is such an amazing place to live. You and your red jeep will really be missed.
