🚨 Chicago… We Need to Talk. 🏘️
The proposed Protecting Renters Ordinance is making its way through City Council, with a final vote expected this fall. If approved, many of the changes would go into effect on January 1, 2027.
Before everyone picks a side, hear me out…
I absolutely believe tenants deserve safe, clean housing. 🏡 There is NO excuse for slumlords, and those who neglect their properties should be held accountable.
But what about the mom-and-pop landlords?
I’m talking about the retired couple renting a two-flat… the family who saved for years to buy a small investment property… the owner living on the first floor while renting the second to help pay the mortgage.
Chicago already has one of the strongest tenant protection laws in the country through the Residential Landlord and Tenant Ordinance (RLTO).
My concern is that adding more regulations, more liability, and more costs could push many responsible small landlords out of the rental business.
And then what happens? 🤔
➡️ Fewer small landlords.�➡️ More properties sold to large investment companies.�➡️ Higher costs to own rental property.�➡️ Higher rents and fewer affordable housing options.
That’s not good for landlords… and it’s not good for renters either.
This isn’t about choosing landlords over tenants. It’s about finding balance so we protect renters without making it impossible for responsible housing providers to stay in business.
