Who remembers the Lumberyard Mall in downtown Carmel?

Before today's apartments and Arts & Design District there was a shopping center near Rangeline Road and the Monon that housed local businesses including The Fashion Exchange and other specialty shops.

By 2002 the property was being rezoned for downtown redevelopment and the original mall eventually disappeared.

Do you remember shopping there? What businesses were your favorites?

Who remembers Knobby Hill Motocross in Hortonville, Indiana?

Starting in the 1970s this Hamilton County track became a destination for motocross riders.
Dick Bruce operated Knobby Hill for nearly 30 years and I found actual racing records and a 2002 newspaper report documenting 236 riders competing at one event!

Former racers still remember the challenging hills, deep dirt, and apparently even COWS wandering onto the track!

Did you race at Knobby Hill? Do you have photographs or old racing memorabilia? Also does anyone remember when it closed?

Remember when the Indianapolis Zoo was located on 30th Street?

Long before the beautiful zoo along the White River Indianapolis families visited the Washington Park Children's Zoo.

It opened in 1964 and featured a miniature train, a Dutch windmill entrance, and the unforgettable Willie the Whale!

In 1987 the original zoo closed and approximately 500 animals were relocated across Indianapolis.

What happened to the old zoo property? It's still part of Washington Park today.

Did you visit the original Indianapolis Zoo? I would love to hear what you remember about it!

Hamilton County keeps growing, but can the people who work here afford to live here?

We've lost older homes, small neighborhoods, and mobile home communities to redevelopment. At the same time our own housing studies show that many local jobs don't pay enough to support the cost of housing.

New development isn't automatically bad, but we need to ask whether we're preserving and creating homes that people at different income levels can afford.

What happens to our businesses, families, and communities when workers are priced out? I'd especially like to hear from people who have had to leave Hamilton County because they could no longer afford to stay.

You used to pay to travel Allisonville Road!

Before the shopping centers and subdivisions a little village near today’s 82nd Street served farmers and passing travelers. By 1901 this corridor was helping demonstrate the future of automobile travel.

A little cemetery near 106th and Allisonville Road holds a connection to a community many people have never heard of: West Liberty.

Eller Cemetery survives near the former site of a Quaker church. It’s also the burial place of Civil War veteran James A. Payne whose story became tangled with local ghost legends.

Do you remember the mobile home communities along 146th Street and River Road in Noblesville?

They were replaced by the RiverWest development, but I've been researching another part of the story: What happened to the people who lived there?

Residents were facing relocation in 2022. City records acknowledge their concerns, but I haven't found a complete public accounting of where those families went or what assistance they ultimately received.

New development can bring investment, but losing existing affordable housing has a human cost that deserves attention.

If you lived at Hamilton Estates, Graylan Place, or Winding Way, I'd appreciate hearing your experience.

Do you remember the old Carmel Motel on U.S. 31?

Once located at 14016 North Meridian Street the Carmel Motel advertised air-conditioned rooms, televisions, a swimming pool, and nearby dining.

Ringo Starr reportedly stopped for breakfast at a restaurant near the motel during The Beatles' 1964 Indianapolis visit! Italian Village later operated at the Carmel Motel.

In the 1990s the property became connected to a terrible tragedy. In 1994 Dorothea "Dot" Crain was murdered at the motel. Her remains weren't discovered until 1997 and her husband's murder conviction was eventually upheld by the Indiana Supreme Court.

The motel eventually closed and was demolished as Carmel continued changing around it.

Do you remember the Carmel Motel before it disappeared? Did you ever eat at one of its restaurants?

Did you know Noblesville has a foundry with more than 130 years of history?

What began during Noblesville's industrial boom became a major manufacturer of cast-iron bathtubs and sinks. By 1915 the Union Sanitary Manufacturing Company employed approximately 350 men!

There were generations of workers, multiple ownership changes, a tragic case involving deadly silica-dust exposure, and documented environmental contamination. In 2014 the property's redevelopment involved environmental assessments and restrictions on certain future land uses.

This is another important chapter of Noblesville's industrial past that deserves to be remembered.
