Before temperatures drop, take a little time to prepare your home for colder weather. A few simple fall home maintenance tasks can help prevent problems and keep your home comfortable throughout the winter.
Here are 10 things to check before the first freeze:
🏠 1. Check your furnace – Make sure your heating system is working properly and replace the filter if needed.
🚰 2. Protect outdoor faucets – Disconnect garden hoses and shut off outdoor water lines if your home has shutoff valves.
🪟 3. Check windows and doors – Look for drafts and replace damaged weatherstripping or caulk where needed.
🍂 4. Clean your gutters – Remove leaves and debris so water can drain properly as temperatures change.
🏡 5. Inspect your roof – Look for missing or damaged shingles and other areas that may need attention.
🔥 6. Check your fireplace or chimney – If you plan to use your fireplace this winter, make sure it is clean and ready for use.
🌳 7. Prepare your landscaping – Protect sensitive plants and clear leaves and debris from around your home.
🚰 8. Check exposed pipes – Insulate pipes in areas that may be vulnerable to freezing temperatures.
🔋 9. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors – Replace batteries and make sure your detectors are working properly.
🧰 10. Check your winter supplies – Make sure you have the basics you may need for snow, ice, and colder weather.
