A Loggerhead Sea Turtle nest discovered on the Currituck four-wheel drive beach this past week has set the record for the number of nests found on the Northern Outer Banks in a season.

🐢 Sea Turtle Update: Southern Shores Now Has Three Nests! 🐢

Nest #14 was located and protected yesterday by N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles), bringing Southern Shores' total to three sea turtle nests this season! 🎉

This loggerhead mama chose a shallow nest site with eggs spread out, making a quick response especially important. N.E.S.T also noticed that she had to navigate a hole in the sand before laying her eggs - a good reminder to please fill in any holes you see on the beach! This helps protect nesting turtles, hatchlings, and beachgoers from injury.

When visiting the beach, remember:

🐢 Give nesting turtles plenty of space.
🔦 Keep flashlights, phone lights, and camera flashes off.
🤫 Stay quiet and observe from a distance.
🏖️ Fill in holes, remove beach gear, and take your trash with you.
